I am 42 and got my 1st pacemaker on April 29. Everything I have read on here is kind of scaring me. Am I supposed to have complications? How do you get shocked from your pacemaker?I haven't had any problems and am feeling great.

 

 

You won't get shocked from a pacemaker...just an icd. You should be feeling great. Keep up a positive attitude and unless there is a problem you will feel great. Many of our feelings are expressed and they aren't serious and when they are, someone here might have and can give you the benefit of their experience. I am just really scared as I have always had a heart condition,had open heart surgery at age 4, but never on any meds and never anything as scary as this. My heart rate fell to 29 bpm and they did the pacemaker in emergency surgery. I really do feel great, shoulder still sore, but its only been 3 weeks.

 

Complications occur less than 3% of the time! It seems a lot higher if you read the posts here because that 3% come here for answers. Most of the other 97% doesn't have a reason to come looking for us. Keep feeling good! It should be nothing but uphill from here.

I'm 42 also and on my 3rd pm, also a congenital problem. It doesn't take long to get used to the idea of having it, and you should find you have a lot more energy now that your hr isn't dipping. If you have more questions about living with a pm, please ask away!

 

I too am 42 and had pm put in 3 months ago...no complications. You should be great if you already feel great now!
I too get scarred when I go online and read too much into it. It's best to stay positive and realize more people have a pm that we realize. Sometimes I feel like a misfit at my age w/ a pm, but am thankful it fixed the heart pausing at night!

It does seem scary to me too when reading our friends messages on here, but it is only because I do not understand the medical jargon that is being said. I am in England and when going for a pm check, all we are told here is whether battery is good or battery needs replacing. That to me is all I need to know. They say ignorance is bliss. Maybe I am ignorant, but it is only because I am afraid too. I had my 1st pacemaker implanted in 1987, the second one in 2004. This pm since being implanted, I have not been so good, maybe because I am that much older he he he. Whatever you do, carry on with our group, I would be lost without my friends on here.

 

Some of these posts are scary. I'm 2 years into my first pm. The problems I had were with anxiety and depression. But now I'm settling in and running about 30 miles a week and feeling much better.

I'm from Arkansas too! Some of these post are scary, but these folks always have found an answer to my questions and if they don't know, they send me in the right direction to find the answer. I live in the mountains, 21/2 hours from my main dr and 40 minutes from a hospital. (Air Evac works real well.) I also work with a great group of people who have come to my rescue several times. Build your own network group in your area. Send me a message and we can talk. The main thing is you are not alone. There are alot of us out here.
