Any guidance on the best settings for a defibrillator ?

My ICD is set at 36joules for defibrillation, but it seems to me that this is excessive jolt of juice. In two recent incidents after the defibrillator went off, the skin showed severe damage, was visibly burnt, and smoking. Anybody who has been exposed to these odors knows how offensive they are, not to mention the unsightly burnt skin.

Obviously this problem is very unsettling and annoying to say the least, and with the holiday season rapidly approaching in America the last thing I need is this type of disaster with a large gathering of friends and family. So I was hoping that someone here, maybe Frank or Smitty, anybody, could suggest a better setting for my ICD.

With the results I am experiencing at a setting of 36 j, it seems reasonable to me that may be too high, or maybe just the duration which is 40ms is too long, I dunno. I sure would appreciate any guidance as I’ve already burned up 2 twelve pound turkeys using a 36 joule setting while testing my ICD turkey recipe, and they were still frozen. For my friends with the pacers, I tried my PM function and that turkey is still cooking after 5 days so it's probably not a good option.

Thanks in advance for your help

I'm just glad that I've been knocked out for my 20 joule cardioversions. LOL...

I did, however, have an extreme hunger for Turkey afterwards.

What other tricks ya got up your sleeves in preparation for the holidays, I wonder.

Tee, hee ZzzzZap,

This is a joke, right?

I've had eight shocks, never lost consciousness and never saw or smelled smoke. In fact I've never even heard of such consequences and I'm on two other ICD forums.

You need an EP and I don't think I'd wait very long for an appt. Or, you need a friend and a tent and some props for a side show-step right inside, see the smokin' man...

He's going to set up the tent and sell ICD roasted turkey. It's his specialty, he's been trying to perfect is recipe before Thanksgiving.

(yes, it's a joke, Patch is the expert at making us laugh when we're in danger of getting too serious)

Sounds like the setting is too low and short. Something like 500j for 15 seconds would seat the leads and make better contact.

Also, you need to be trained in handling a Taser. With these settings you could easily protect yourself.

hope this helps,

frank (zapppp)
