I live in Atlanta and travel via air on a regular basis. I was implanted on 4/22/10 and on my first trip a couple of weeks later I was encouraged by TSA to use the Millimeter dectector, even though I told them I have an ICD. They told me it was like a zillion times less radiation/magntism than my cell phone.
Sounded pretty cool, but I opted for the pat down. Anyone out there have any experience/advice?
Thanks. David

I just received an ICD from St. Judes, last week. I also travel a lot via plane for work, so I emailed the company directly to ask about these new detectors. I'm in Indianapolis and they just installed them. It is what they recommend that Pacemaker and ICD patients use. St. Judes confirmed that they were OK. Now .. I'm assuming that you are referring to those new machines that essentially take a picture of you in the nude, and have been in the news a lot lately.

Thanks, Ken. I gave Medtronic a call and they confirmed the safety of both types available... the Millimeter Wave and the Backscatter X-ray. The key seems to be that you need to be at least 6" away from the wall of the device. Atlanta has the Millimeter Wave so I will give it a try next week and will let you know how the experience went.
