PM and Machinist work
Posted by dieguy on 2010-06-05 16:38

Are there any other tool and die makers or machinists out there who wear pacemakers? Large magnets and welders are used every day in my business, and Medtronic advises to stay at least 3 ft. away from those . The plant where I worked shut down for good about a month or so after my device ws implanted, so I never had much chance to test my PM in an industrial environment. Have not been hired again since the shutdown in '09. Have been a toolmaker for 36 years. If I can work again, it might have to be in another facet of the business (away from the shop) or another line of work entirely. Might have to settle for SSI disabilty since I also have severe carpal tunnel and advanced arthritis of the neck. Has anyone had a similar experience?

Give It A Try

Hi Dieguy,
I work around a lot of machinery and used to do centerless grinding. I noticed if I got too close to the hydraulic motor on the grinder I would feel a little dizzy. As soon as I moved away I felt fine. I've also had similar feelings when I go near a large compressor. It's almost as if my pacer gives me a heads up and lets me know I'm too close. I know welders are not good for us but I've been around them without any issues. I am currently working around large extruders without any issues. Unless you're getting down close to the motors or magnets they shouldn't bother you at all. If they do just back away from the field a bit and you'll be fine. Tool and Die making is a lost art. It's the backbone of manufacturing. I've known many people in your field and it's amazing what you guys can do.
Good Luck,
Bob
