Watched a hospital program late last night. Centered to some extent on Great Ormond St Hospital for Children. One of the patients a 14 year old boy keen on sport was brought in having suffered a heart attack. A flap of skin was discovered inside his heart which was removed during an operation. However the doctors were convinced that he had further problems and he ended up with an ICD after further tests . I was quite amazed when they tested the ICD during implantation. His body almost bounced off the operating table. It took 2 hours to put it in and test it. I must have experienced that during my many cardioversions prior to my pacemaker. They told him it would stop him suffering SDD or sudden death syndrome. His mother was quite tearful as you might expect. He was convinced that his sporting days were over by the doctors. Cheers Peter

I saw it too. Part of a brilliant series (think this was the last episode), which covered lots of heart issues because there was a lot of focus on the Royal Brompton Hospital. Just a shame it had such a late billing, which meant I missed quite a few.

Was I the only one who had their arms strapped down during the procedure? I was asleep during the procedure but prior to giving me the sedation, they had these big leather straps with the soft inside and they told me it was to keep me from getting hurt. Then they dropped this tent like thing over my head which was totally unexpected with no explanation. My daughters thought I was kidding when I said I woke up in pain during the procedure and thought the doctor was standing on my chest with his knee and heard them talking. I moaned and then ZAP, I was back asleep. I had also been told by someone was was awake during the procedure that they stop the heart, then hit the switch to see if the device works before suturing you up. Does anyone know if any of this is true/possible? I'm sure the Mother was tearful. My heart breaks for them, just reading his suffering.
