I havea crazy question... Due to living in a tourist town, you can never get parking anywhere..even at walmart. I have trouble with the shortness of breat still and well what the doc would like to say anxiety attacks...and with those comes the dizyness. I am curious how it works about seeing if i can get a handicapparking tag? Can people with PMs get this? Just very curious. Thanks all.

I have one. All I did was ask my Dr if he would sign a note so I could get one. I took it to the local driving place (DOT here). They gave me two tags. Good luck and I hope you can get one. Sounds like you need one.

Don't mention the dizziness. You may find your drivers license revoked at least until you go through an extensive medical review. They are very sensitive about any mention of certain symptoms here in Calif.

Doctors note

If you get a doctors note you can get a sticker, but my doctors are funny, they want me to walk as much as possible, and refuse to give me a sticker. Get this my heart EF is less than 30% and my Lung function is less than 28%.....and they still want me to park at the back of the lot and take as long as it takes to walk inside...They pushed me to file for social security disability and they even wrote letters to the Social Security telling them I'm disabled, yet they refuse to get me a handicap sticker...I can't figure doctors out.....And I end up walking past 10 empty handicap spots, or I find 3 cars parked in the HC spots without HC stickers..........good luck.........

Hi
I live in Calif. all I had to do was have my Dr fill out a form and bring it to DMV the Dr just has to fill in your Diagnosis etc DMV does have certain requierments using a cane or walker or if you use oxygen so just get the form from DMV and bring it to your DR,Good luck

I had a temporary one for 3 months after the implant. Dr signed the note...no questions asked. I could have applied for a permenent one.....but I really didn't need it. The guilt made me let it expire.

But next Christmas season...I will be smacking myself!!

Due to the extreme pain in my lower legs after standing, walking on them for a few minutes (10-15), and fighting for 'closer' parking places with the younger, healthier species of humans, I was forced to ask my GP how to obtain a handicap tag. I put off asking for a tag until my pain was excruciating (sp?) first.

My GP wrote, signed a note, I went to the DPS Driving bldg. to apply with my Dr. note. The whole process was very simple. After taking my vital info. ~ driver's license, DOB, etc. (I might of had to show 2 types of ID), the DPS issued 2 handicap hang tags to me. Thankfully, my Dr. had noted it was a permanent tag and not temp.

I was told I would need to go in and have the handicap hangar tags renewed every 4 years, just to update info. I would not need to go back thru my GP, just DPS. "Simple process".

I was told that if I abused my handicap tag, let anyone else use it for any reason other than for me in the vehicle, the handicap tag could be revoked, never to be issued again.

I have to say, without my handicap hang tags, I could not/would not ever be able to leave home. What really aggravates and makes me so very mad, is for all the handicap spaces to be filled, my legs killing me already, the weather at an extreme of hot/cold/pouring rain and young teenagers/very 'well' people, jump out of a vehicle parked in a handicap space, almost do a skip/jump/hop into a bldg. & come out & look around & get in the car ~ 'no heart' ~ ~

Yes, I do know some people who do have and use a handicap sticker who do not look handicapped at all. These people experience bad conditions which does not show outwardly, but for a person to blatantly drive a vehicle, park in a handicap place who does not need it, should be fined (I never see that type 'caught').

Yes, if you really need the handicap tag, get one. I just would NEVER abuse mine. Guard the tags with your life. DPS warned me that tags are stolen everyday and do not leave a tag in a temp. vehicle, it might disappear.

Tourist Towns

I just got back from the Smoky mountians on Monday and it was packed everywhere we went! I can't imagine trying to find a spot to park on a regular basis there. My husband I typically parked the car and then just walked everywhere we were able. That and we tried to hit the national park by 7 every morning so we could avoid the crowds and hike while it was actually a little cooler outside. If you're having light headness, and shortness of breath I would ask for one. I'm 31 and for the most part I look like a pretty healthy person. It's frustrating not being able to lift a bag of groceries or open the heavy door. Don't be afraid to ask for one. If you don't need it in a few months you don't have to keep using it. Best of luck, Anna

Zombie, if I was in your situation, I would think about checking with a different doctor. I don't have need for a handicapped sticker but my wife does. She has nerve damage and can't walk very fast or far. Before we moved from Florida to Arkansas this spring, I went on line and got the Arkansas form. Our GP in Florida signed it (we had HP plates in Florid) and when we registered or van in Arkansas they accepted the HP form. Sounds like you deserve and need a handicapped sticker.
Good Luck,
Bill

In the UK we don't use the word handicapped, it is classed as a derogatory term, we prefer to say that a person has a disability.

I have a pacemaker to make my heart beat at the correct rate, I do not consider this to be a disability, it enables me.

Obviously man people have other heart and medical conditions which may mean that they cannot walk well and of course these people should be given some sort of a parking badge so that they can park close to facilities.

I am a little concerned at people saying 'dont mention the dizziness'. Surely if we are still at risk of going dizzy at the wheel we should mention this, even if we do get our licence revoked.

I certainly wouldnt like to be the one to say dont mention it and then find out a few weeks later that the person with the pm, their children, someone's family had been killed because someone experiencing dizziness at the wheel had just carried on driving and not reported it.

OK controversial post - I know, am awaiting the fallout!

With HH about the dizzy part.
If someone is experiencing dizzy spells.............they shouldn't be driving!!! JMO
I'll sit in the corner with HH & wait for the fall out. ;)
As far as the handicap parking stickers, tags, passes, whatever they are. I HOPE someone TRULY needs it & that's why they got it. "Just because" one has a PM, doesn't seem like a good enough reason. Shortness of breath, etc. are reasons, but "just because" isn't.

In Arizona they have an online form. Dr. fills it out.
I just put unable to walk 200 ft.

Surely the pacemaker isnt the cause of you only being able to walk 200ft though, what I was getting at is if youve a medical condition requiring help with mobility then getting a disabled sticker is fine, but just having a pacemaker doesnt make someone disabled.

Disability placard

Hi!

I live in California and I know you can just download a form from the DMV. My doctor happen to have them in the office
I simply asked if I should get one and she filled out the form. I signed and she sent it in for me.It was a temporary placard.....then just about a month before it was to expire...I received a permanent placard. I prefer the "placard" to a sticker because if I should go anywhere in a car other then mine (even as a passenger) I can still take the placard with me.
My husband often asks me to go with him to the home fix-it stores now...so he can park closer.
good luck
Jud
