Food Stamps
Posted by nvphone on 2010-08-13 11:18

This has nothing to do with a PM, but seeing that people have problems paying medical bills this really set me off.
I was waiting in line at the store and had 3 women with 3 to 5 kids each in front of me. Now, I have no problem helping a person in true need to set the record here.
All 3 bought cart loads of junk food and I saw maybe $20.00 worth of real food.
One of them was parked next to me and got into a brand new SUV.
Talk about a waste of taxpayers money. Here I work in the heat, pay taxes and I do not get to lay around and eat junk all day. Wonder what program paid for the new SUV?

The car wasn't hers? She borrowed it?
I NEVER ever thought anyone in my family would EVER be unemployed due to the economy, but yes, it has touched us & everyone we know. My son in law is out of work right now. I told my daughter to see if they were able to get food stamps. We've (as they have) paid into this government program for many years.
Having small children, I'm sure one day there might be someone standing behind criticizing her for having junk food in her cart.
We can't pass judgement on people. Not until we've walked in there shoes.

nvphone,

As you stated, this has nothing to do with PM, and your thoughts on this subject were, perhaps best kept to yourself.

God provides for all His Children. Some of them are less fortunate than others. With the American economy, and even the Nation, now, we see more and more of these type of programs. Thankfully, the USA appears to have very good programs for people in need, just way toooo much red tape and paper work.

I do know and have known some Families who have taken advantage of the programs. I have known their Families before them took advantage of the programs and the future generations only know how to 'use' the system. They abuse food stamps & always say, gimme, gimme, gimme/'you owe it to me'!

Having worked in education for 30 years, some of the Families I have known, do 'sport' high dollar cars, wide screen plasma TV's, take nice trips, etc. I do know they stand in line for the annual 'winter coat' distributation, all the holiday meals for free and they are also the very ones who 'scream' to the top of their lungs they are 'discriminated' against for various things. I praise the USA people who do need and do use the system.

In my heart, I have to keep thinking of all the other citizens of the USA who do need and have to have special help during these horrible times of job losses and economic downturns.

Let us not judge, as that is not our job. Leave the final judgement to God.

Love to All,

I agree with CABG this is hardly the place for such comments. Anyway, how do you know they were being supported by the government because they were buying what you class as junk food? They could have been stocking up for a family or neighborhood outing.

I had a friend on food stamps - she needed them but didn't know how to manage it weekly or monthly. She bought for now and didn't have enough for the month so I showed her how to do it and I had her using coupons. She hated me for this lesson and hasn't spoken to me since. I regret helping her. People need a class on how to budget with everything. It probably was a borrowed car. My husband was retired and never stopped working and is working 2 part time jobs right now to make ends meet and I am also fortunate to have a son that can help if we ever need it.
I also agree with cabg, but it hurts when people have medical problems such as ours and we get no assistance with our medical bills. My sympathy is with both sides.

Now days the "food stamps" are in a credit card that is "loaded" each month with the specified amount of dollars. I don't even know how you would "know" they were using the program.

Ok, so you posted some comments about a very controversial topic. Let's not get too excited here. I sense that you typed this while you were still irritated about it and spoke before you may have had time to think it through.

nvphone, I understand where you are coming from. I sense that you were just "venting" your frustration and now your comment has taken on a not so nice tone. I sense that you were just seeking to understand rather than criticize.

People in my town don't think I should live in a large 4 bedroom home and have 3 cars, but I do... of course that was before they got to know me. :-) Now they want to know how I did it!

Please continue to post and ask questions, because that is how we support one another. I'm sure that this has probably caused your heart rate to become elevated and I hope you are feeling better now.

Take care,
PG

Iam glad someone finally wrote with a friendly comment like PG did. We all get frustrated at times and it is great that we can freely express our thoughts here. Make it a great day!

How would you feel if someone posted some sort of negative racial comment, or something to do with religion? Just because they "got frustrated" or "needed to vent?"
JMO, but sometimes some things are just best left un said.

To LS, I don't know what I said that was racist. In fact were did race get into this? Religion? Sorry you were offended, Laben.

Re-read my post. I DIDN'T say you said anything racist. Good grief. I used that as an example. Please re-read it.

I first try to understand where a person is coming from and what they might be trying to say. If I have a question to ask, so to learn more about them, then I will ask. Even when I don't like what they are saying. If I understand exactly what they mean it makes it easier to respond. I try to consider that sometimes people give what I call "knee-jerk reactions". Meaning to say that what they posted isn't always what they meant. Also as readers we don't have the benefit of knowing tone of voice, the facial expression or their personality. So I have learned to first give the benefit of the doubt to the poster. I ask questions for clarification when needed, no matter what the subject.

I myself have been guilty of thinking a person was saying one thing and come to find out after a lot of hurt feelings, that it was just a misunderstanding from the very beginning! How awful to put people through a situation like that because I had jumped to the wrong conclusion because I didn't try to understand.

Many friendships can be ruined, family problems created and wars begun because there was no benefit of doubt given, no seeking to understand.

No Race Card

Comment posted by nvphone on 2010-08-15 23:00.
Please do not play the race card on me.
I have a Black wife, kids and grandchildren, including great and I am white.
I served 39 months in a fox hole and you get over race issues very fast. A Black person saved my life at age 13 and I am noted in my area for standing up for equal rights for all Americans.
I have been before the US Senate on these issues and been on TV and radio.
No where did I say a word about race.
I said I was sorry posting it and now ask that it be removed.
If sorry is not good enough for some you, then I feel sorry for you.
I now feel unwelcome here and wish you all the best of luck.

Hi Nvphone,

Please don't feel unwelcome or be offended and quit coming around. I can tell you from experience that if you post messages here at some time there will be people that make uncalled for comments. When it happens to me I just back off for few days and let my indignation, or sometimes anger, cool down and then come back to offer whatever help I can, or many times get help myself.

We need your comments just as we need the comments of every one. I think we all come here because we feel we have a great need for information about our pacemaker. Information we cannot get from our medical professionals.

Frankly I don't care if your wife is purple. If you love her and she loves you, then it just ain't nobodies frigging business.

I hope we continue to see you around,

Smitty
