Bumpy roads
Posted by my pet on 2010-08-26 00:23

Hi, I am a newbie posting and with a pace maker. I first noticed problems on the way home on bumpy roads where my heart sped up for 15 to 20 seconds. I also have the same problem when having relations with my spouse. Are there any settings that can help with this? Please advise me what to ask the Dr. and Pacemaker Rep. to change. Thanks, R

Rate Response Maybe

Yes there are settings that can be adjusted although I think what you have is a rate response that is turned on. The RR is supposed to increase your heart rate when you increase your physical activity. This is controlled by an accelerometer in the pacemaker and it can't tell the difference in vibrations from a bumpy road to jogging or whatever.

Ask your doctor if the rate response is on and can it be adjusted so it won't be so anxious to kick in.

Thanks for your reply J.B. I am going to the Dr tomorrow to get it adjusted. It was implanted a month ago today. I will ask about the RR. Thanks again!

May not need Rate Response

The Rate Response is turned on by default on a new pacemaker from the factory. Often doctors just leave it that way if there is no problem.

If your problem is "heart block" you don't need the RR. It will definitely increase your HR for any kind of movement. In my early days with a pacer just the vibration of the jets in my hot tub on my shoulders would drive my HR up to 140 or so.
