since having this thing I have to start a new career, I was a truck
driver for many years, and in the state of Ohio I don't know about any other state but, I can't get a medical card . A truck driver can't drive without one. So I've have to start all over again with a new career, Don't know where to start . Thought about being a cable
tech. But that involved being around wires, and electrical boxes, stuff, so let me know?

Cable will be low voltage, so I would think it would be OK, of course if you are an installer, you will have to climb ladders to get to the connection boxes. Anyway good luck on what ever you choose.

That thing you have is an icd. With that rascal you will never pass a dot physcial. That is what happened to me. If you look in the federal motor carrier act you will see that pacemaker is ok, a difibrillator is not. As for being a commical driver is concerned you are SOL. Good luck on finding something to do. I was lucky and was able to retire.

device type?

Hi cprater,
What kind of medical device do you have? People with ICDs are prohibited by the federal regulations from obtaining a Commercial Drivers License in any of the 50 states, but people with pacemakers are not prohibited, as long as their medical condition is stable and does not involve syncope (fainting), typically for 6 months after getting the PM. Individual states are allowed to establish medical standards that are more stringent than the Federal standards, but most states adopt the Federal standards directly. I'm not sure about Ohio.
Were you a long-haul driver of a large truck? I've forgotten what the GVW limits are for requiring a CDL, but if there are trucks that fall below the GVW limit, would it be possible for you to get a job driving one of them? How about a mail postal carrier driving a car or with a walking route? What about getting into the landscape business if you're physically able to do that sort of work? House painting (or perhaps you're not supposed to climb ladders?) What sorts of jobs did you have before becoming a truck driver (or was that your first job out of school?) Do you live in a city or farm country? If a farming community, are there farming jobs you can do? Farming equipment operated on private farm land is specifically exempted from the Commerical Drivers License requirement even if it involves driving a truck.
Best wishes in your search for a new career, and please let us know what you end up doing.
Take care, CathrynB

With exploding energy costs there are a host of opportunities in the field of energy efficient buildings. Many of the jobs would likely require some additional training (no idea of your skills and education) - you might be able to get some of the training on-the-job. Check your local electrical utility, do searches on things like energy auditing, insulation retrofitting, duct testing, solar roofs ...
