out of a job
Posted by tigger_2 on 2008-06-25 13:56

I just had an icd implanted jun of 08. The most worrisom part of it is the fact that I am no longer able to return to my job as a mechanic in a school corp. The job requires a cdl and ability to do heavy work. This is the same type of work I have done for thirty seven years, After the placement of my device I have to surrender my cdl and return to a regular license. Has anyone else had to work thru the same problems.

I would imagine that you could still do heavy work, as long as you don't have a heart condition that would preclude you from doing it. I assume you need the cdl to test/move the school buses around.

I got my ICD on Jan 17 and had the same problem. You will have to look in the Federal motor carrier act. In there it says that with a pacemaker you are OK. But with the ICD you will no longer pass a DOT phy. They are afraid that you will pass out while driving. Sorry. Well one good thing is you have found some people in the same boat so grab a paddle and come sail with us. I a also a hoosier from Lafayette.

I was asking if you don't have a heart condition that doesn't allow you to do heavy work. The ICD implant itself shouldn't stop you from working/lifting as much as you did before the implant.

So, except for having to avoid strong EM fields, and not being able to actually drive the vehicles, you should be able to perform all your other regular duties.

I was first diagnosed with a low rejection rate 15% it is now only up to 32% and a left ventricle block. Still taking more meds than food and doc has limited lifting to only 20#'s . Its been a long wait and see ordeal. But I have good support at home.
