metal detectors in hospitals

Hello Everyone, I have a medtronic pacemaker and travel to healthcare organizations across the country. Due to the uptick in violence, many of them have installed metal detectors. I have been able to avoid, but I don't want my colleagues to know or ask questions. Is there a card I can show them or is it necessary to avoid them?

Thank you so much once again.

Pam

On my latest trip to the hospital, I too was stunned to be confronted by a metal detector at the door.

Your consternation that our society has devolved to this point is understandable, but there is no need for you to fear going through the metal detector.

It will not harm you or your pacemaker. You don't need to avoid it.

Just walk on through as if everything is okay. That's what I did. And what my friend who also has a pacemaker did. Without experiencing any problems.

Just to give you some perspective: The metal detector was at the entrance to the wing where all the cardiac/electrophysiology suites are. It was a sure bet that a high percentage of people going through the detector had pacemakers.

Of all the metal detectors I've walked through in the last 30 years, I've only set them off 3 or 4 times. Just don't linger. The alloys used in implants do not set them off.

I've been surprised by the lack of secuity in hospitals for a long time. I remember when visitors had to sign in at the desk and a receptionist would check the name vs. the room number. One had to check out, as well because visitation was limited.  They would often restrict access to family only and/or have strict visiting hours.

Things opened up, so now there is unrestriced 24hr access.  Odd, in these times. Hospitals have become huge gun-free victim zones.
