question

Hi,

I feel like a should know the answer to my question but I don't and I can't find it the brochure I was given.
I had a meditronic consulta CRT-D defibrillator implanted in March 2009 and there were unpleasant complications. However, it has brought my EF from 20 to between 50-55. I feel well most of the time but my stamina has been slow to come back My question is this: I was watching TV around 5:15 p.m. when my PM started emitting a solid tone (no beeps). It lasted for about 10-15 seconds. I did not get zapped, I did not feel bad then and do not feel badly now. I will talk with my Dr. tomorrow but in the meantime I'm wondering--no one mentioned any solid tone coming from the PM or any warning alert like that, etc. The only thing I can thing of was I just purchased a bracelet with a very strong magnet closing and it was quite close to the PM. Could that be it? Help?

Sounds from Pacemaker

It's certainly possible that a strong magnet could cause the pacer to switch into safe mode. There have been others here that have mentioned sounds from their pacer. I have the technical manual for my Medtronic Kappa 701 and it makes no mention of an audible alarm.

Is it possible that the sound was coming from the TV?
These new system with the surround sound setup can make sounds that seem to come from anywhere in the room.

As for your stamina being slow to come back, if you went very long with the low EF it can take a while to restore the damage that happens from low blood flow.

Thanks Frank and Thomas for your replies. My Dr. has not yet returned my call so it's still a mystery to me. I do think it was the magnetic bracelet clasp but I am not about to test that theory without backup around. It was definately not the TV, it's 15 yrs old, no new modern goodies on it. When I find out (if I ever do) or if it happens on a schedule , I will update you. Thanks again.

Good to know

Thanks for the information. I try to keep up on this sort of thing. I don't have a CRT or ICD so I'm a bit of a loss on them.

sounds from PM

by thomast - 2009-09-29 12:09:04

I have a medtronic CRT unit. It has an audible alarm which I hear every day now at 5;00 PM as the battery is at ERI. It can also alarm for other situations. If it detects a lead problem ( have one fidelis lead) it will alarm every 4 hours. Acouple of years ago it started going off every day at 5;00, turned out it had almost had to zap me but not quite, so alarmed every day until I got in and had it reset.I am getting a new one on Oct. 21. Battery has lasted 53 months.
