You need to talk to your physician. Like Frank says it could be an issue with programming but could also be signs and symptoms of angina. One thing I've learned (and I have a medical background) if you believe there's an issue don't let it drop. I had one EP person tell me that I had vasovagal syncope and needed "to relax" when I described my issue and told him I had sinus pauses. By the way he was also the one that told me I never had myocarditis 30 years ago because I didn't have a heart biopsy. I told him they didn't generally do them for that reason in the early 1960s. Well when I got another opinion and had a loop recorder placed guess what-I was having periods of sinus pauses of >3 seconds and some actually read as asystole because of very long pauses. I now have a PM!

The difficulty breathing and chest pressure are usually associated with insufficient cardiac output. The normal response to telling a cardiologist of these symptoms is to get you in for a stress test or echo-cardiogram.

I'm only taking a guess, but the whole thing may be related to the programming of your pacemaker. If the upper limit is set too low it can cause your heart to start skipping beats at a time when you need them. Pacemaker issues can also give strange symptoms like the pain in your right ear.

One other possible problem could be gastric reflux. Exercise can force stomach acid up into the esophagus and cause diaphragm spasms. Again this can cause pain radiating up the right side of the neck into the ear. I've had this for a number of years and take Prilosec OTC for it.

Pain in right ear

by mrag - 2009-06-06 12:06:31

My first heart attack was 30 years ago. At the time, I was complaining about "ear pain" after exertion and no one made any association with the heart (they did check for strep throat!). About 2 months after my ear complaints started I had a heart attack. I've been told I'm "wired differently" and hence my "angina" was showing up in my ears and not in direct chest pain.

Three years ago I got an ICD and was put on all sorts of drugs. One major complaint I had was on exertion I would get a lot of pressure in my head-like a balloon being blown up and effecting my ears. I have CHF and it turns out I was carrying 20 pounds of extra water (edema of the legs) which a drug other than lasix helped empty in 4 days. Ear pressure all gone (for now anyway).

Bottom line is, I would be very cautious and take this "pain in right ear" very seriously-aggressively push my cardiologist on it (maybe try nitro when you have an episode??). I'm not sure we have the exact same "ear pain," but for me, it is a clear warning sign for a heart related issue.

Sorry you didnt appreciate Cabg's comment, but sometimes we need to have a laugh about things or we'd all go mental. Well, I think ive probably already gone mental!

Seriously though, Cabg is a great club member and wouldnt mean to offend in any way.

The heaviness and the breathlessness I had for a few months after receiving my pm, it went off earlier this year. Doc said it was fine.

Pain in the ear I cant help with at all, possibly because ive had problems with my ears all my life and my right ear often hurts and i get tinnitis in it.

Or, it could be because im such a pain in the neck that ...........lol, take no notice of me.

If you are worried do go back an nag the doc.

You know you're wired when...

You can hear your heartbeat in your cell phone.
