CT Scan

My CT scan was scheduled for today. I called and had it rescheduled for later this month. While I had the nurse on the phone I asked her why the Dr. had ordered this test for me? I went on to explain that I am very allergic to the contrast iodine used in the CT scan and if I am expected to place myself in such a precarious position I need to know why. She had no answers. She was evasive, said she didn't know why and that she would ask the Dr. and call me back. That was at 8:30 this morning. I have yet to receive a reply.

There is one thing for sure, and that is, that I will not being having ANY CT scans without an explanation of what he is checking for and why he feels this is necessary.

I am no longer intimidated by this man whom I call the "Cardiologist". I know he is an expert in his field, but I am also expert in my field. So I now feel that I can deal with him on a level playing field. Yay!

My husband taught me that! hee hee...

When I have to contact any Dr., this sounds like the same story I get every time. No one can answer your question(s) and no one ever calls back. What class of bed side manners is this medical 101 taught in?

This happened when I had a horrible hurting in my lower right calf of my leg. It started on a Sunday morn. I called my GP first thing on Monday morn. She said I could see my GP on Tuesday afternoon. After explaining my pain and how unusual it was to have a 'permanent charley horse', she re-emphasized I could see the Dr. the next afternoon. Well, by the time I was referred to a surgeon to remove THE blood clot, the surgeon scolded me with all he had & told me, never to wait when there is a blood clot involved! As if I knew what it was. Med 101?

Please, if anyone knows what the name of the class is that the nurses/PA/receptionists are required to take to 'know nothing & will have the Dr. or someone to call you back", I would be interested in the name. To me this should be the first AND last course taken before graduation ~ maybe, emergency 101 or just manners?

Thanks to all of you good medical people who do not adhere to the above behavior. I wish everyone could be like you ~ ~

So very glad to hear you are questioning the reason. Because of a serious head injury, I had 5 CT scans of my head in 13 months, and now I refuse any more x-rays or CTs unless absolutely necessary. Also, had abdominal and chest CTS.... my cardiologist wanted a test that would involve more radiation and I refused, and the answer I got was "either cancer or a heart attack?".... well, you know, I think I will choose the heart attack... love you and hang in there and get a good reason...all my blood tests show great results so that is a part of my refusal.... aldeer

So glad you are pursuing this. I really was worried about you having this scan. Of course, if you really need it, but allergic reactions are not something to mess around with. Hope the doctor gets back to you soon. Don't let them get to you - you're doing the right thing.

oh god . it is awful that you were advised this way. i never said i don't,
know i said idon't know but will find out for you and followed up. if i am wrong i will suck it up but if you are allergic to the dye don not accept taking it love,jessie
