When can I fly?

I have decided to put in a pacemaker. I have had a slow heart beat for many years. I have no symptoms. However as my heart rate is around 35-40 most of the time and getting a bit slower over the past 4 years, my doctor is pushing me to put in a pacemaker. I am in good shape, 65 years old, live an active life. Mostly I want the pacemaker because my right shoulder needs a rotator cuff surgery so I can continue to play basketball. Can I still play basketball with a pacemaker?

Some doctors say not a good idea, others say go for it.

What I want to know is how long after the implant before I can fly? I need to fly 4 hours 1 week after the operation to my daughter's wedding. Then two weeks later fly 20 hours back to my home (I now live in Malaysia, but will do the operation in New York).

Any suggestions on recovery time, complications and any problems flying so soon after the implant?

Thank you.

Basketball

I would wait at least 6-8 months. Basketball requires a lot of arm extension... explosive arm extension... which is the worst kind.

If you decide to go for it, stretch gently before each game. Slowly raise your arms to maximum extension, and gently move them to all posisions. And no dunking for sure.

If you feel up to it and it does not conflict with your check ups at the hospital it should be ok to fly after 14 days. I cant recommend any contact sport , you will be taking some risk. Cheers Peter

hi there i flew twice within the first month, no probs at all. Just make sure you have your pm card for going through security checks and perhaps it would be a good idea to take half an asprin if youre not on other meds and wear some of those flight socks.

hope it goes well
