Meds

I have changed to diltiazem this week. I am taking 60 mg a day in divided doses. This medication is in the same family as verapamil. They are both calcium channel blockers. Previously I was taking a beta blocker. Both have worked well on my blood pressure, but my pulse was really fast. They seemed to think it was the beta blocker, even though a beta blocker normally slows the pulse. I have taken the diltiazem for 4 days. My pulse is still high most of the time, but I don't feel it as much. I seem to have more energy and have slept better. Not sure if this will help, but I am happier with this med.

Verapamil

I had verapamil (calcium channel blocker) prescribed for me a number of years (mid-80s) ago and it worked fine. I was started on 240 mg/day but that was reduced to 180 mg/day when I started having palpations. The 180 mg/day was the best dose for me. I was changed to diltiazem 60 mg/day, also a calcium channel blocker, after about a year. Not because it was thought the diltiazem was better for me, but I could get it free and at that time there was no generic available. My wife worked for the doctor and was friends with the sales lady who saw that I had a good supply.
