EMI testing

I am an Electronics Tech, and work in a place that makes all kind of stuff for nuclear energy plants (and I work directly testing them) and also alot of other things that I will not get into, & they do not know what EMI they have. They are not sure what they are going to do when I go back to work about the testing, since they found out they have to pay for it. I will have to wait and see what their decision is before I can go back. I guess when I get released from the doctor, he will have to put on the release that I cannot work in EMI areas, if they do not do the testing.

EMI & Pacemakers

Hi Jimmy,

I may not fully understand what you are facing, so if I say something here that does not apply or does not make sense, you will know why.

My suggestion is that your company invest in a gauss meter to check out the various areas, even if they have the areas checked professionally. From what I can find an electromagnetic field that has a gauss reading as high as 5 is still safe for people with pacemakers. However, that number may not apply to all pacemakers so you would want to check with the manufacturer of your PM and ask them how much EMF is safe for you. These meters are not very expensive (a few hundred dollars) and if you have one handy then you could do your own checking whenever you felt the need.

So that you will not feel like the long tail cat in a room full of rocking chairs, I can tell you that unless you get into an extremely high EMF (such as a MRI) it is not likely to damage your PM. When you get a PM checkup your PM is purposely exposed to an EMF by way of a magnet to change the position of a switch in the PM so that changes, if needed, to your PM settings can be made. In the case of the PM checkup, as soon as the magnet is moved your PM goes back to operating as it should. I would expect the same thing to happen in the event you got into an EMF that could affect your PM at work, unless it is an extremely strong one.

Good luck

I've seen many posts about people being concerned about exercise after having a device so thought I would let you know that yesterday I raced my first marathon since having my pacemaker fitted in fall 2004.
