Hey, it is me, the Worrier/the Long Winded, who has asked questions for the past 4 mo. re: pre-PM from all of you ~ to have OR not to have PM ~ My cardiologist/EP did the PM/ablation placement last Friday afternoon ~ it is Sunday eve. now. I was the one w/A-fib, trachy, "gurgitating" some blood flow (?) ~ ~ boy, YOU who do KNOW , can definetely tell I know nuttin' about what I am "spouting". The cardiologist told my family while I was still in "recovery" everything went fine ~ I ended up with a Boston Altrua 60, Model #5603, then it says "Guidant", dual w/dual wires, whatever that all means ~ I was released Saturday a.m. from the reknowned Austin Heart Hospital ~ I was given an antibiotic prescription for Keflex (500 mg) 4xday. I was given a lot of printed matter on PM/batteries/ heart pics/ETC. before/after my implant ~ ~ MY questions could NOT be answered by pre-printed materials ~ NOW, I have more questions ~ I can not even tell I have a PM (no tell/tell signs of any beats, etc), except, the area of the "pocket" where the stitches are were pretty sore yesterday when I left the hospital ~ became unbearably, horrendously painful ALL night last night & I called the weekend "Medical Exchange" for the Dr. on weekend duty early this morning and had pain medication called into my pharmacy. I have Vicodin generic (500 mg) ~ 1 pill every 6 hours ~ still painful but is bearable. Common sense told me the area of the stitches would be sore, BUT, I never knew that area would be this painful ~ feels like the stitches themselves are being pulled by any movement ~ like me getting up/down from chair/bed/etc. As a grown person "who should know better", I was crying w/pain last night. My question to all of you with a simple PM ~ is the "stitch" area suppose to hurt so bad AND how long? I read in some of your comments before my PM placement that you felt like going back to work, etc. the day after PM ~ There is not anyway I could even concentrate on anything right now because of my pain level ~ ~ In the surgery room itself (very busy w/about 6+ people prepping me), a lot of things were going on while prepping me, of which my cardiologist did not talk to me about NOR did I know to ask BEFORE prep ~ My Dr. is nationally known/good, but does not have any bed side manners/ patience. He is good, but very "to the point" and "matter of fact" only. As a female, I now have some questions how your heart Dr. could see where the "wires" should go ~ what areas did they have "camera" like pics to guide him in placing the lead wires, etc.? This part of the female anatomy I can not/won't ask anyone who personally knows me ~ sometimes I think I am imagining some of the "prep" work before they put me to "sleep" ~ ~ I guess it is way too soon to notice any change in my body, but the swelling in my feet/ankles is still with me, of course any salt aggravates this condition also ~ should this be of concern until I go in for my first Dr. appt. this Friday (this is Sun eve) to check my PM area? IF you can think of any simple, BUT, really important to me, things/steps/ procedures you can remember about your first PM placement ~ PLZ. share with me ~ ~ As it is now ~ except for the painful "pocket", I think I am ok, BUT, I do NOT look forward to any future change of batteries NOR any reason to open AND go thru the stitching/healing process again ~ I know not to raise my left hand above my heart nor lift much weight ~ Again, THANX to all of you for your past comments AND I really look forward/need any helpful hints, no matter how simple ~ ( :

Yeah, it's definately an ouch...big time. I had to call in for a stronger pain script. My suggestion would be ice. I know it sounds simple, but I used an orthopedic ice machine and it helped so unbeliveably much that I cannot even begin to tell you. I also stuffed my bra with small ice packs when I needed to go out, it helps with the swelling and I know that that area hurts more because of how they have to prep you (and none of the Drs seem to understand how sensitive that area is!) I also had to basically hold my breast everytime I moved for like a week and a half, and I only got a loop recorder which is smaller than a PM.

New PM

Hi Carolyn,

I can't began to answer all of your questions, but I think I can answer a couple. We all respond to the surgery differently. Some hurt like the devil, and some are like mine, never hurt all. I will say if the pain is still bad Monday, don't hesitate to call the doctor and tell him how bad.

As for knowing where they are putting the leads or wires they use a Fluoroscopy. This is an imaging device that provides an Xray like image that is used by physicians to obtain real-time moving images of the heart. I have had the "opportunity" to see these devices in action many times while I was having a heart catherrization. During these I can see my pacemaker leads and what has always impressed me is every time my heart beats those leads move which makes me realize they must be made of very durable materials.

Back to your pain, it should not be long lasting pain and if it is I say you should make life as miserable for that doctor as the pain is making yours.

Now I have a question for you. Is the name of your doctor Price? He is the one that did my implant and as you say is an excellent surgeon and is world renown and has the personality of a toad. He left the hospital where I got mine in Temple in '00 and went to Austin Heart Hospital.

Good luck,

Smitty

THANX to justme & Smitty for your quick comments ~ Smitty ~ my cardiologist is Dr. David J. Kessler, originally from Phil/Penn. He graduated from Harvard, then Jefferson Medical College in Penn., then to residency @ SW Med. School in Dallas. Dr. Kessler is board certified in the specialties of Cardiovasular Disease & Clinical EP (NOT bedside manners!) ~ He is always getting recognitions/awards in his field. His offices/colleagues offices are the floor above the 2nd floor Heart Hospital of Austin which continually gets national recognition ~ just read of more awards recently ~ ~ AGAIN ~ IF anyone can talk/help/offer any info/blurps/etc., I would love to hear from your comments ~ ~ I still love the ol' saying ~ ~ Life isn't about how to survive the storm ~ BUT, how to dance in the rain ~ ~ ( :

Incision pain

Carolyn,

People experience pain differently, so don't worry if your pain level is different than someone elses. Ice followed by heat can work very well. If it is ok with your physician you could try some Ibuprofen instead of the vicodin, the NSAID can help with the swelling better than the tylenol that is in the vicodin. My doctor allowed me to go without a dressing over my incision after the first day which also alleviated some of the pain for me, I found the big bandage very uncomfortable and it rubbed on my clothes and irritated my incision more.

The biggest thing that helped me was to ask for help when I needed it. Remember it takes your body some time to recover so allow some time to rest and relax.

I hope you are feeling better, take care.

Whew!!!

Yesterday was my first day mountain biking after my implant. I wiped out several times and everything is fine. There are sports after pacemakers!
