Atenolol

Does anyone have any experience with Atenolol 25mg for tachacardia?

Took my first pill today, felt a little tired but I was really trying to take it easy so not really sure if I was in lazy mode all day or if it was the meds.

I took a nap and had some crazy wild dreams. Not sure if that was the med though.

It must be working because I have been running "slower" all day.
Thanks,
Wendy

Beta Blockers

by pacemaker writer - 2010-02-04 05:02:02

I don't take any of these drugs, but as a writer, I know that this is a beta-blocker. (All of the drugs that end in -olol are beta-blockers.) The most common side effect of any beta blocker is fatigue and lethargy but I understand that this usually evens out after a while. Don't know if that's what folks actually experience, that is what is written about these drugs.

I am on it

Hey Wendy,

I am taking 50mg a day of Atenolol sometimes more if I am having a bad day. I do not have any side effects from it that I can tell. It does not seem to really work for me. I have been on it about six months and I still have the fast rates.
I hope you have better luck:)

Metropolol

by bgarza - 2010-02-04 06:02:27

Hi Wendy,
I take 25 mg of Metropolol for PVCs/palpitations. I had alot of issues with PVCs the first couple of months after my PM along with my anxiety issues. But I found that this beta-blocker did help and at my last PM check I have not had any PVCs. I don't feel fatigue unless I don't get enough sleep and rest. I also take alot of supplements (Daily Vitamin, 1200mg calcium, 1500mg potassium, Mega B-12 with Vit C). My potassium level runs low (3.5). Thinking back- before my PM, I was not only dizzy and felt like I was going to pass out alot, I was fatigued and drained at the end of the day. After the PM and all my "drama" I realized that I felt more energy and have adjusted well to my new heart rate. Hope you feel better soon. - Blanca

On Atenolol

by Island Girl - 2010-02-04 07:02:42

I have been taking 25mg of Atenolol for at least six years. I have had no side affect from taking it. I used to get terrible migraines in the middle of the night. So bad were the migraines that I had to go to the emergency room. It was suggested I take the Atenolol before going to bed. Since taking it at night I have not had a single migraine. I tested myself to see if the Atenolol was really stopping the migraines by cutting back to 12.5 mg. I started to get headache at night so I am back to 25 mg.

Side effects are supposed to get better after 4-6 weeks and it works better as it builds up in your system, so I would say one dose is not enough to judge. I've been on 25 mg just about 6 weeks now and don't notice any side effects. Are you taking it at bedtime? I was told to do that to minimize side effects, sleep through the worst of it.

17 Years of Atenolol

by donb - 2010-02-04 09:02:54

Hi Wendy, Hope you have good luck as I was on it for 17 years. Started with 25 mg daily at first and ended up cutting them in half, morning and the other half at bedtime. This worked out great, no rhythm problems.

A little over a year ago had a bout of Atrial-Fib and again a little later when I was without my PM for 2 months. Shortly after I had my new leads & PM put in and was put on 80 mg. Betapace (Sotalol), twice a day which is a stronger Beta blocker. So far I haven't had any Atrial-Fib and am able to do a lot better on treadmill along with a more stable & lower HR.

My wife is still on Atenolol for many years, high blood pressure and rhythm poblems, no PM. She takes 25mg twice a day. She is a heart patient with multiple stents along with 100% blockage of left coronary and is doing fairly well. donb

Too Many Years to Remember ~ ~

by Carolyn65 - 2010-02-06 01:02:13

I have been on Atenolol for high blood pressure for many years. Maybe since 1993. We are a family of many generations who "like" to share high blood pressure/high cholesterol genes. I did not know it was prescribed for anything else. It sure the heck did not affect my A-fib when that came on several years ago.nor affect my high blood pressure in the early years.

Taking the high blood pressure meds/cholesterol med, etc. is just like drinking water, it is just natural to grab them & go. Can't say my health/attitude changed.

I took it about 10 years ago, but did not stay on it long. It made me feel kinda MAD??? They told me back then that it could alter moods. Some of my family has been on it for YEARS w/ NO side effects.

Hope it works for you!
