PAC's PVC's and Beta Blockers

Does anyone notice a significant difference in having PAC's, PVC's when taking a beta blocker?

Does it make them go away?

Thanks

Beta Blocker Treatment Results

by SMITTY - 2010-02-27 06:02:18

Hello Wenditt,

At first glance it would seem that a simple yes or no answer for your question is all that is necessary. But based on my experience and what I have heard others say a more accurate answer is maybe yes or maybe no.

For me beta blockers have never worked and I have tried at least 8 or 9 different ones since 1984. Before I got my pacemaker I learned they would reduce my heart rate but the PACs, PVCs (I can not tell the difference) and skip beats changed very little. I did experience extreme fatigue with each of them.

Now that is my experience. I have seen some of our members say they got the desired results and some have reported results like mine.

I have to add this. My arrhythmia was an on again off again problem until Feb. '07. It then became a serious problem. I saw several different doctors and tried several different medicines and pacemaker settings, all to no avail. Even got one stent that was supposed to be a sure fix. That was just BS.

In July, '09 several PM settings changes were made with the most significant one being increasing the low setting from 70 to 80. This made an amazing difference as the PACs, PVCs and skip beats were reduced by at least 80 to 90%. Then in Oct. '09 the PM battery died (it was 9 years old) and I got a replacement. I stayed with the same brand, Medtronic, but got a different model PM, VERSA, where I had a KDR 700. Since then things have not been as good, even though the settings on the mew one were supposed to duplicate the settings on my the old PM. The result is I have had 4 attempts to get the optimum settings, and while we are closer than at the beginning, I would say we are no more than 75% of the way there. But we are gaining.

I had my heart disease diagnosed in 1982 and since then it has been an on going battle with bypass surgery, various medicines, pacemakers, stents and the like. All I can say is yes, I'm still alive and I have learned with medicines and all medical treatment it is a pay your money and take your chances. In some cases the results have been beyond my wildest dreams, and in some cases it has been a nightmare.

I would suggest to anyone that when there is a significant change made in your treatment regimen make notes of how you are responding to whatever you are doing before the change so that you will have a reliable reference point. I have found that if I don't make notes my memory may fail me again.

Now, do you have anymore one sentence questions. I'm not going any where for a couple of days. Of course I'm kidding, but if I have learned anything in my life it is that my answer to the simplest question can be long and in most cases probably longer than necessary. So if I have bored you, I apologize.

Good luck,

Smitty

PVC's

Can't say if I noticed a big difference in my PVC's after starting atenolol wich was at least 6 years for blood pressue (I am sure I only had white coat hypertention) But I do notice certain time of the month (hormones) and caffiene really change them, (more often) but that doesn't mean that it wont help you have less. PVC's

by Jules1983 - 2010-02-27 10:02:25

I used to have a alot of pvc's (6300 on 24 hr holter). Fast forward a couple years and now am on 100mg daily of metoprolol. I have just a random few pvc's aswell as a random few pac's . Well within normal limits. I'm not sure though if I went off the betablocker if the pvc's would come back or not.

Thank you

Thank you everyone for your feedback. I took the beta for a few days and noticed I wasn't having any PVC's or PAC's...but I wasn't sure if it was in my head or not!

LOL...which by now we all know is completely likely! ;-) But I'm getting better!!! YIPEE. I tried to give up worrying as my New Year's Resolution....that didn't work. So this time I am trying to give it up for Lent! So far...so good! Knock on wood, rub the rabbits foot and praise Him!

I'm off them now...for now....but might take them again. Anyone take them during pregnancy? The listing says not to but both doctors (EP and Cardiologist) said I could. Not sure what to believe.

Thanks again!
Wendy

I'm superstitious about telling!!!! Well, with tongue in cheek I must say I've been real fortunate with the thumps & bumps over the years doing Tenormin 25 mg per day.
With my 3rd PM I developed Atrial-Fib last year. That PM eroded and I got my 4th PM with new leads also. At that time Feb 8, 2009 I was put on Betapace 80 mg mainly to keep from going into Atrial-Fib. It's doing a good job so far, haven't noticed any AF, PVC's or PAC's. One effect though it has lowered my BP more than Tenormin as it's stronger. Also I'm on a larger dosage like 80 mg twice in 24 hours. I wasn't real punctual with the 12 hr at first and now I try to keep within the 12 hour as prescribed. Reminds me, it's 9:00 AM & 9:PM for pill time. And it's 9:00 PM now!! Hope you're doing well as I haven't been bugging you, I just read a lot of posting.

I don't like to read what I post sometimes so that slows me down. Also again RELAX !!! donb
