Medical Alert Tattoo

I'm not a fan of medical bracelets, or just bracelets in general so I've been thinking about a heart tattoo on my inner wrist with the pacemaker symbol inside. Has anyone ever did this? I was told by my doctor it would be a good idea to wear a bracelet since I'm so young but since I've had the device I never end up wearing it like I should. So I figured a tattoo would be the next best thing, but i'm a little nervous since it will be there forever....let me know what you think:-)

Medic alert

Other people have asked this question before. Medical people only look for medical jewelry, not tattoos. I wear my dogtag all the time, ocasionally I wear my bracelet for nice occasions. The company American Medical ID at www.identifyyourself.com sells a line of silver jewelry called odyssey, that may be more of your style, and something you might wear - check it out. I have the bracelet, it is chunckier for a man, but they make a smaller one, and also they make necklaces.

think about it

You can't change your mind, so I'd give it a lot of thought first. If you have any doubts at all, wait.

I'm not a big fan of bracelets either, but I've gotten used to it. I have a charm bracelet for dress, a sportsband from http://www.laurenshope.com/ for the gym and an assortment of beaded bracelets for the rest of the time. I got the plate here then my aunt made me an assortment of bracelets to go with it

Anyway, it's still a chore to remember it all the time but I'm getting better. I'll post pictures in the gallery.

about the tatoo option...

by pawsY - 2009-11-07 05:11:07

IF you decide on the tatoo, I would make sure it surrounds the PM and points to it with arrows!!! The folks who need to see it are NOT looking for tatoos.
Not trying to spund negative, just realistic.

I received my bracelet from www.creativemedicalid.com
Take a look. LOTS of options.
Trust me, so far it is the only thing I enjoy about having a PM!!!

My sportsband came from american medical, the tag I use on the beaded bracelets came from laurens hope.

paws, they won't do a tattoo directly over a pm.

the DUH was directed at myself, not you :o)

I agree...

I agree with exploring your options for medic alert. I have a bracelet and dog tag. If I don't feel like wearing the bracelet, I always have the dog tag. There are also necklaces.

Ask any Ambulance Attendant, First Aid Attendant, Anybody who may have to deal with a patient who is in shock, can't talk, etc. They'll ALL likely have a story about a Medic Alert ID making their job MUCH easier - and perhaps saving a life.

Youngin

Hey Trixi,

I am really young too... Only 23. I got my pacemaker when I was 21 and I have worn a medical alert bracelt since the day after my implant. I agree it sucks being young and having to wear a corny peice of jewlery that can make up feel like old people, but there are lots of new sites and stores that are selling medical jewlery that is more appealing to us young people.

I also contemplated getting a tattoo for my pacemaker but decided against it. And I agree with everyone, Medical personal don't look for medical tattoos they only look for the Jewelry. My brother is a firefighter and he even said he wouldn't even think that a pacemaker tattoo would even qualify as a reason for them to think you have a pacemaker and that most medics wouldn't even know what that symbol stood for. So it my suggestion to stick with the bracelet or another type of jewlery :-) If you have any more questions please feel free to ask.

Love and Hugs

Thanks everyone for all your thoughts and suggestions:-)...i've checked out all the website and they do have some pretty bracelets but I know myself and I know I would never wear them, they just drive me crazy!! I still have alot to think about and I'm definetly not going to jump into anything without doing some more research. I know it all depends on who you talk to but I have spoke with a few fireman and paramedics and I was told by all of them that of course when they try to find a pulse they first look for a medical bracelet but do look for tattoos in the inner wrist location. More and more they have seen tattoos, mostly on diabetic patients but have seen them for other medical conditions as well. I would never get a tattoo anywhere near my device, I too have heard that is definetly not a good idea and honestly I couldn't image being tattooed over my device.....my PM sticks out so much from chest already, no thank you!!
