Glandular Fever and Pacemakers?

Hi everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone has had (or been close to) someone who has had Glandular Fever whilst you have had a pm?

I've never had it, however my colleague (who is also a close friend) shares an office with me and she has just spent the week in hospital. She was finally diagnosed with the virus today after her lymph glands and spleen swelled and blood test came back positive. Another girl at work has also just been tested and is awaiting results. As it's contagious, everyone at work immediately started asking me if I was ok, and said that I should call my doctor because of my pm. Their concern worried me, so I called my Cardiologist and he said that it's most likely I've already been exposed to the virus before (as most people are at some stage in their lives) and so not to worry.

I have definitely been exposed to the virus in the past, as 3 months before I met husband he had a REALLY severe case of it to the point where doctors told his parents to fly in as they weren't sure what would happen. He took a good 4 months to get better and suffered tiredness for a year after...from what I have been told you can remain contagious for up to 12 months afterwards. A doctor we saw a few years back also said that as we have been in a long term relationship (9 1/2 years) that I would most certainly have been exposed too.

So...should I really be worried now that I have pacemaker and someone I know has it (I'm almost 4 months post implant)? She is the kind of person that always gives you a kiss on the cheek when you see her, but we definitely never shared cutlery, drink bottles etc.

My husband also currently has flu like symptoms which worried him a little, but after seeing the doctor today he gave him antibiotics and assured him that he just has the flu.

I feel fine other than my throat being a little scratchy...however we are coming into flu season here in Australia.

Your experiences / thoughts would be appreciated!

Thanks!

It sounds like you've already been exposed, so there's nothing you can do at this point but hope for the best. If your dr isn't worried, then I wouldn't be worried! I've never heard that glandular fever (mono in the US) is particularly bad for us. In a lifetime of having heart problems, the only thing I've ever been warned to be extra careful about was exposure to strep throat/scarlet fever because they can damage the heart. Anyone in my family having a sore throat with a fever immediately gets whisked off to the dr for a strep test.
