Healers v.s. Mechanics

Good afternoon,

Do you guys feel your cardiologists/EP's are more technical mechanics than nurturing, caring healers or both. If both, you're lucky!

Dealing with cardiologists for years now, I asked everyone of them "why" they became cardiologists...AND everyone of them shrugged and said "I don't know," I kid you not!

Ask me why I spent a long career in the Coast Guard risking my life as a first responder...and I would say to "save lives."

Interesting...just a thought.

Healer or Mechanic

Well, I'm no cardiologist but I've been a cardiac intensive care nurse for 24 years. I don't know one specific reason why I chose this profession. Yes, I've participated in saving many lives over the years but I don't think of myself as a saviour. I love people and helping them feel better, that's it plain and simple. Hearts interest me most of all the body systems. Know what happened to me today? A patient having a hypoglycemic reaction kicked me in the mouth and split my lip!!! That was after he spit instant glucose in my face! Maybe not a good day to answer your question. I don't happen to belong to the Your Doctor Is An Idiot contingent on this forum. Some of the finest people I know are physicians, cardiologists and otherwise. They're out there repairing damaged hearts AND saving lives and they don't have time to get philosophical about why they do it. As for their being mechanics, just be thankful that they do know the mechanical workings of your heart. Not a one of us is capable of implanting our own pacemaker.

Subject hits a point for me..

Well, since we are discussing if doctors are mechanics..

My first EP was technically proficient, but in every other way, he wasn't.

He didn't discuss much about my ICD at all, basically told me there was only a slim chance I'd need one, didn't discuss implant location choices, so when I awoke to a large disc protruding from my chest, I wasn't to happy.
It seems that I was more of a number to be worked on as fast as possible, doing what was easiest for him, and get it done. If it was me, I'd be disgusted with myself for doing such a sloppy job.

If we go with the car analogy, let's say your computer needs work, they add another part to make it run correctly, but instead of putting it under the hood, they drill a hole and tape it to the hood with duct tape. That's how I feel my EP did the implant.

I Went for my checkup last thursday

by walkerd - 2009-11-26 06:11:14

had my interogation thursday, go in and nurse that ussally starts and prints all the paperwork from the pm, went over the reading just as normal before doctor comes in. Told her of all the happenings that I had had since last visit she showed me where I had an arithmia on sept 9th pm kicked in, icd starting getting ready to zap me, pm did its job icd shut down. She left the room like normal and came back in telling us my Doc was at the hospital and wouldnt return for at least an hour to hour and half and we could wait. she went over all the tests doc wanted me to do and me and the wife talked he was over at hospital working with someone who needed him like I did a year ago, everything was answered by my nurse who is very very compitant as a cardiac nurse. so we left.
What I guess my long winded story is a few months ago well alittle more than a few but I would have gotten really mad about this, but figured hey doc was helping someone that needed it worse at the time than I did. I wish i could find a mechanic that does the kind of job they do.
