low pulse with medicine

HI everyone :)
I have some questions for you...
I am taking the medicne Metoprolol once a day 50mg
and have been on it for about 3 weeks ..I have noticed my pulse going down into the 50's alot - then coming back up and staying at around 68 or so...my lower limit on PM is set to 50
I asked my Dr about this last week..becuz when my pulse goes down I feel like I use to before the PM was installed..so he suggested that we set the lower setting at 60 and try that...my upper limit is set at 125..so I wondered if anyone else has experienced this and what they did about it? and did they change your medication becuz of the low pulse.. I have been doing very well on this medicine..just with the low pulse and not feeling very good when it gets into the 50's....any suggestions or comments you might have for me? Thanks again as always
oh and my pulse doesn't stay down in the 50's it like goes up and down sometimes like a yo yo......?

I haven't had my meds changed since the PM. I also take Metoporol but I do 2 x's a day.
I can feel my heart "fluttering" at times, & at others it's racing. Even laying down in bed. I'll be interested what they say when I go in May.
Last time I called after a terrible racing episode they said to take 1/2 of the Metoporol when that happens.
Funny how different we all are huh?
Hope you find some answers.

Metoprolol and PPM

The metoprolol comes in 2 forms (Toprol XL once a day and Metoprolol which is a 2 time a day drug.)

If you are have high heart rates (eg. atrial fibrillation), heart failure, prior coronary artery disease, then a beta-blocker may be important for you treatment.

There is solid data that the medication helps in those conditions.

If it is only for high blood pressure, then you may do better with another medication.

With respect to the device, setting the lower limit at 60 may be in your best interest regardless of the beta blocker. Especially if you feel poorly when your pulse is in the 50s.

Good Luck

I had been taking a beta blocker for many years, but as my heart rate kept going down and I felt so tired and dizzy, my cardiologist decided to change me to different meds and I did feel better. I guess it's your doctor's call based on what your complaints are and how problematic they are for you. My lower limit is set at 60 and that seems to work well for me.

As the others said, beta blockers will always lower your pulse, that's what they do. Trying out a higher minimum setting is a quick and easy solution, esp if the metoprolol is otherwise working for you.

Thank you :-)

Thanks all - I do know this meds is a Beta Blocker and do know that it lowers the pulse - I have AV block
and take this medicine once a day.... so I guess I will just have a chat with the Dr..when I got to see him in May - the metoprolol works well for me - the dizzness is not as bad - things will work out for me :) I am positive.... thanks again
Happy easter :)
