Excersise Prior to PM Fitting

I have been diagnosed with nocturnal complete heart block (lasting 1hour 45 mins) and left bundle branch block following exercise. I have had an angiogram and MRI scan to access if my arteries were blocked, this proved ok & I am now currently on the waiting list for pacemaker fitting.
My question is, Although 54, I am still a keen sportsman taking part in activities such as Trail running, kayaking, Fell walking, Mountaineering & Mountain Rescue. I have not taken part in any sporting activities since my diagnosis which was several weeks ago, and it's driving me up the wall !!

Would it be ok to keep active whilst waiting for a PM to be fitted ?

My Doc advice

by Pelelives - 2009-11-22 02:11:22

2:1 block with severe bradycardia and right bundle branch block (2nd degree block). I hadn't fainted "yet." Three doctors said I was tolerating the condition well and that I would likely faint before I would have cardiac arrest. His advice was to stop if I felt weird and not to do anything wild like hike the Grand Canyon. Also, to avoid going off by myself. I had the PM put in within a month of the diagnosis so I just slowed down (literally) so that I didn't have an emergency event. Better check with doctor so you an assess your risk and act accordingly. I know how it is not to exercise when you are used to it, especially when waiting for the PM surgery. It just adds to the mental stress.

You have to WAIT???

Chill! Cool it! Keep quiet and unactive whilst you wait unless you have a death wish. Another UK'er. Seems like the whole country is Pacing.

Why is it that you have to WAIT??? Wait for what? Till you get worse or die??? Please enlighten me.

Ask Your Dr.

So sorry you are in the "wait" state. Must be frustrating. I certainly would not feel comfortable answering your question so suggest you ask your Dr. Best of luck!

Hi Gary,

Basically waiting for my op/inplant, I have had all the test - ECG's, heart monitors, angiogram, MRI heart scan, ultra sound (heart & arteries) blood tests, stress test. My local NHS Hospital (Blackpool) has been brilliant no complaints, I guess there are others who's conditions are worse than mine.

I would just like to get bsck into my sports asap

Best Regards

Paul

Yesterday was my first day mountain biking after my implant. I wiped out several times and everything is fine. There are sports after pacemakers!
