What is an EP?

I hear a lot of people mention about an EP. Can anyone tell me what an EP is and what they do, and what is the difference between an EP and a cardiologist? Thanks.

EP is a specialty of Cardiology. My Cardio referred me to an EP in his practice for the PM. EP put the PM in & did my AV node ablation. I see both as needed. And, T.G, that is isn't often now that I have the PM. You may want to check the left hand side of this page, someone has done a nice list of all the abbreviations you will probably see on this site.

Oh, thanks Janet. I did check out the abbreviations and I think I'm actually going to see an EP on Wednesday. lol
My cardiologist recommended me to go see an arrythmia specialist for a second opinion. I didn't realize that's what they were.

An EP specializes in the electrical circuits of the heart. A cardiologist is more used to handling the plumbing like arterial blocks etc. The two fields are quite different.

EP
Electrophysiologists are cardiologists who have additional education and training in the diagnosis and treatment of abnormal heart rhythms. Close collaboration between electrophysiologists and other doctors who treat patients with heart disease is important.

It could mean Elected Politician but fortunately it means a heart specialist whose speciality is abnormal electrical rhythms of the heart. Cheers Peter
