Chemical Stress Test

Hi,
I am a 100% pacemaker dependent. Tomorrow I am having a chemical stress test. I think it is called a Dual Iso Adenos stress test.
Does anyone have any information on this test? What happens during the test? What is the purpose for this test? I had received a call with the date and time and some information on what to do 4 hours before test and that was all.
Thank-you
Dool

Hi,
Yes I can not have a treadmill stress test because of my total node ablation.

Sounds like you are having a treadmill stress test without the treadmill. :) These are usually used for people who can not or should not handle the regular treadmill test. The chemical is used to increase your heart rate to simulate what your heart can do while performing any kind of exercise versus just being at rest.

been there; done that

Sorry to ad anything negative...but....It can sometimes make you nauseous. It doesn't do it to everyone but just stay near a trash receptacle or restroom just in case. You get about a 5 second warning from: "Whew, made it just fine with no nausea whatsoever" to "Dear Lord, do not stand inbetween me and the bathroom"...Once you "lose it" you are perfectly fine, and since you've had nothing to eat or drink prior to the test...well, you get the gist. Anyway, don't sweat it. You have to have it to give them the inormation they need.

chemical stress test

The purpose of this test ,is to find out if you have and blocked arties, and or a diseased heart. This is in lei of a heart catherization. The latterr test is with 100% degree of certainity. The chemical stress test is about 95% sure. The reason they don:t do the cath all the time, is because it has more risk factors. Also they don't suspect heart disease in you, they just want to rule it out,(R/O) I've have been getting this test on and off for 20 years. If it is negitive it will give you a piece of mind. Got luck, you will be fine.

An able bodied person can have a thalium stress test on a treadmill. A "chemical" stress test does not have to be a thallium stress test. So you could be having either a chemically induced stress test in order to see your sinus rythm the ECG or combined with a radioactive thallium IV, two scans of your heart, one at rest and the other after your chemically induced stress test. I have no way of knowing which test you are having but usually they tell you in advance if you are having the nuclear scan because it is more costly and takes a long time. I have had three thallium treadmill test through the years, and had time to leave the office and have lunch before the second scan. If you aren't having the nuclear scan, you will be in and out much quicker. If you had the total ablation fairly recently, a nuclear scan would seem unlikely because you had a catherization during the ablation and it was far more definitive. If the ablation was fairly recent, they want to stress your heart to study the electrical reponse of your heart on the ECG.

I just had the nuclear (chemical) stress test. Luckily, it went well for me. I got short of breath and felt light-headed, but just for a minute or so. I had gotten myself all worked up about the test, but it ended up being no big deal at all. It was the same as if I had brought laundry up a couple flights of stairs.

The medicine doesn't really raise your heart rate. What happens when you exercise is that the increased heart rate opens up your valves so more blood can go through. Well this medicine bypasses the exercise and just opens the valves larger. So you are getting the same effect as exercise. Hope that makes sense. That's how it was explained to me.

As for my pacemaker (almost 7 years old) I like to think of it in the terms of the old Timex commercial - takes a licking and keeps on ticking.
