Should I be on blood thinners?

My mother-in-law called my husband this morning asking if the doctor gave me any blood thinners after the pm implant for heart block. The doctor did not give me any meds other than an antibiotic that I finished Sunday.

Did anyone need blood thinners after their procedures? My wound check appt is for next Wed 3/10. Should I ask if I should be on a blood thinner? Also, anything else I should ask the doctor at this appointment.

BTW, the appointment is with my EP, not cardiologist.

Blood Thinner & Pacemaker

I have seen mentioned only one time, not that I have seen them all, by someone that got a pacemaker and had blood a blood thinner prescribes at the time. In that case the blood thinner was for some irregularity with a lead, not the pacemaker. But to keep peace in the family, I world say ask your doctor.

Unless you're otherwise a stroke risk or have additional problems that compound your heart problems, simply having a pm is not a reason to need blood thinners. An av block is just a short circuit. Those of us with that usually have structurally normal and perfectly healthy hearts, we're just missing a little electrical connection which the pm fixes.

I would ask for a copy of your pm report if they do a pm check. If it's just a wound check, they may not do one. My wound check took less than a minute, they're just looking for signs of infection or anything not healing right.

aspirin therapy

I take a low dose aspirin once a day. This I was told was to prevent blood clots from forming where the leads go into heart. My EP said it wasn't necessary, but my cousin who is a cardiac surgeon said ALL his PM patients he puts on aspirin once a day. So I have been doing it since my surgery 1/18/10 as I am not on any meds so no interaction concerns.

alcohol - v asprin

i take a small asprin occasionally, and luckily as im on no meds take a drink occasionally, both of these help keep the blood thin. Just remember years ago a guy who lived near me being told by his doc that his little tot of whisky every day had kept him alive for years. Asprin if taken for too long can cause stomach probs, alcohol taken in large amounts causes all sorts of probs. I think there are some foods that cause the blood to thicken, not sure what they are tho, perhaps it would be worth checking this out and avoiding them

Should I be on blood thinners?

I had a pacemaker implanted in August of 2009 after being diagnosed with CHF back in November of 2008 (left ventricl).

I was not put on a blood thinner after my pacemaker was implanted and now I am dealing with a major complication... a huge blood clot in my right atrium. Due to my prior heart condition, I am wondering if I should've been put on blood thinners after my pacemaker was implanted.

I think that is the key. If your heart isn't pumping as efficiently as it should be, you probably should be put on blood thinners to avoid blood clots from forming.

Should I be on blood thinners?

I had my first PaceMaker at the age of 15 (in my 40's now) and have one ever since without any complications or the need for meds. However I just had mine changed out last year and I have had two blood clots and am now on my second round of semi serious blood thinners. I have always done a lot of long haul travel over the years without any issues and now for some reason I have developed blood clots without any history. So from experience, you don't need to be on a blood thinner after a pacemaker procedure, however word to the wise, don't be too sedentary, get up and about as much as you can.

I started to take Garlic/Turmeric/Gingsing vitamins to help but now have stopped due to the new blood thinner meds. I am also looking into the useage of Whiskey, supposedly a natural thinner.
