Stopping Beta Blockers

Hi Everyone,

I am about (tomorrow) to cut the dosage of beta blockers I have been on since the post-PM tachycardia 5 weeks ago in half (1.25 mg bisoprolol instead of 2.5mg bisoprolol). The aim is get off them completely (I want to have a baby!).

My doctor thinks I won't notice the dosage change because it is such a low dose to start with, but I'm anxious because the lower dose didn't do anything when I initially had the problem. If anyone has any positive stories of reducing their dose or stopping these drugs it would really help me to hear them. I'll even take semi-positive stories (went badly then settled down!)

If you only have a bad story, please don't tell me!!!! Those of you who have replied to me in the past know I worry way too much!

Thanks,
Genie

Beta Blockers

I was prescribed a small dose of beta blockers as well (25 Atenelol) and I too asked about the risks if I should become pregnant... I took them for a little while under the supervision on the Dr. but noticed I would get dizzy a lot and it would drop my blood pressure. So they told me I didn't have to take them if I didn't want to. However-

My ob and the EP/Cardiologist said taking them during pregnancy would be fine. It does carry some risk but being on such a small dose they didn't seem concerned at all. They both talked about many women that NEED to be on them throughout their pregnancies.

Are they telling you that you need to come off them before you should get pregnant? Because I'm wondering if for you like they said to me-does the risk of not taking it outweigh the benefit?

It's a tough choice...but what are the doctors advising you to do?

Good luck-
Wenditt

I don't have any good or bad stories, but will wish you good things to happen!
I'm thinking next Mothers day you'll be posting here talking about your baby!!

Stopping Beta Blockers

Hello Genie,

Over the years I have had a number of different beta blockers prescribed at various dosages and without fail have had to stop the things. I'm one of those people that a beta blocker is the equivalent of a poison. Even as bad as they would have me feeling I have always tapered off because of what the literature said "could" happen. My procedure (I am not suggesting you do as I did) was a 50% reduction for 3 days, 50% of the remaining for 10 days then completely stop. Then about a moth to six weeks I would be feeling better.

My suggestion for you is follow your doctor's instructions to the letter. Not that I think doing other wise would could a problem, but in the very remote possibility a problem such irregular heart beat, or some other anomaly did occur the doctor would know exactly where you were on stopping the medication.

I just had a conversation with my seer and she said tell you the only difference you will notice when you are through is you are taking fewer pills each day.

Good luck,

Smitty
