Midodrine

Hi everyone after having a pm fitted about 5 weeks ago due to Neurocardiogenic Syncope but unfortunatly its not doing what they thought it would as im stilll having dizzy spells etc and my pm is only kicking in at night whilst is sleep. So they have decided to try me on some new drug called Midodrine thats not licenced yet in England. Just wondering has anyone heard of this drug before or taken it .

I have taken it on and off for about 2 years.. I was on it to help give my heart a higher filling pressure so I didnt have such bad changes in my heart rate when I stood up. I wasnt really getting to blood pressure drop.. but I was getting very bad raise in heart rate when i went from lying to standing. I have had to come off it at times because of too high of blood pressure. Did you have something specific that you would like to know about it??

I was more concerned by the fact that its not licenced to be honest, and just wondering if anyone has positive effects from it as im abit sceptical about taking it after they told me a pm would help me and its not.
I think the confusion the doctors have with me is when i stand not only does my blood pressure drop but also my heart rate which apparently seems to confuse them because most people its one or the other.
I've google it but just wanted to know peoples peersonal experiences with it, its all abit scientific on line.
Thanks Mel xx

What do you mean that the Midodrine isn't licensed?

unique

by sam78 - 2010-06-29 10:06:57

Yes you are a bit unique as typically your blood pressure drops you heart rate increases to compensate. Which is why I would gather you are so symptomatic as it makes it even worse. If you heart rate drops then yes a pacemaker would help in that situation but it would not fix the drop in blood pressure if it is not related to heart rate. How much are you taking and how often? Its hard for me to tell you whether it worked for me or not because i have such complex issues and it was very hard to tell the difference. Really the easiest way to tell for you is how you feel and what your blood pressure does on the medication from lying to sitting to standing. I had very few side effects from the medication when I was on it. I never got swelling or anything like that. But boy when I had high blood pressure from it.. I REALLY HAD HIGH blood pressure.. I got up into the 180/110 range.. it was aweful

dose

2.5 twice a day... wow that is a tiny dose. you have a long ways to go.. I was on 10 mg three times a day. Maybe a higher dose will help your symptoms and raise your blood pressure a bit.

by not being licenced i mean that for a drug to be prescribed it has to go through testing and the medical council have to agree it but this one hasn't in england but has in other countries( i think thats what it means anyway)
Yeah my cardiologist said that appaerntly im not classed as confusing.
I ahve been on it for a couple of days and am on 2.5 mg twice a day or though my blood pressure whilst standing hasn't changed still low i just took it and it was 105 over 68 when i go to the hospital next week they said they will up the dose.
The problem im having at the min is im not doing what i would normally be doing so can't tell if my pm is going to work as i have been sitting around alot firstly because i had it fitted now because i started a child care degree 2 mths ago so am studying sitting down alot maybe i should run around abit that might make it work. ;-)

I'm 35 and got my pacemaker a little over a year ago. It definitely is not a burden to me. In fact, I have more energy (which my husband enjoys), can do more things with my kids and have weight because of having the energy.
