New to the club

I joined the ranks of the many people with pacemakers in 7/09. I have a-fib and tried just about every antiarrythmic without luck. Still had frequent episodes of a-fib, I was on tikosyn, metropolol and looking at putting a third medication with these when I decided to go for the ablation. The ablation went very bad , the MD hit one of the "hot spots" and my heart stopped for some unknown reason and did not restart. I no longer have any function in my lower heart and I am PM dependant. Please think long and hard and get ALL the facts before deciding to go this route. This has been very hard for me to accept even at the 1 year mark.

Hi & Welcome. :)

So sorry to hear your ablation went wrong.

Unfortunately things can go wrong during any kind of surgery. There are always risks.

When I had my pacemaker implanted, one of the leads "poked" a hole in my heart, my heart started to bleed into the heart sac, my heart drowned, stopped beating, I died not once but twice, before the ER docs finally figured it out, then I had emergency surgery to save my life. It was "the" worst time of my life and for the first 2 years after I was a basket case mentally.

For a long time I was very angry but eventually I got over it. I'll never forget what happened, but I'm glad I'm still here to be able to tell my story.

I too may have to have an ablation and I will admit - I am scared to death. However, if I need it - I need it and will cross that bridge when it comes.

I've also had several other surgeries and every time I have had some kind of complication - I guess I'm just one of those lucky people that if something is going to go wrong, it's me it happens to.

But you are 100% correct in what you say...we as patients have to educate ourselves the best we can prior to any surgery and then it is our choice (most times) to go ahead with it or not.

Again, I am so sorry that your ablation didn't go as planned, but please believe that one day you will get passed it.

Hugs,
Pookie
