new pacemaker owner

I am confused about what happens at checkups. I just got my pm on Dec. 6 and am still adjusting to it, and waiting for the incision to heal. Has anyone tried the product that protects the site of the incision from bra straps. I have yet to put on a bra because I think it is going to rub. Any information about adjusting to my new way of life will be welcome.

Fortunately no problems yet.

I received my PM 12/1/10. Was worried about the bra issue also. I have worn a bra the last 3 days and am having no problems at the site of the implant. I have, however, experienced some discomfort in the back of my shoulder on the implant side, left side. Good luck. I will be checking the responses you receive for helpful hints.

Give it a little time

I felt the same way about the bra strap. Had my pacemaker on 11/1 so it's been about Six weeks. After the swelling and soreness go away you can probably wear the bra. I got one at Soma that the straps are pretty much to the side and it hooks in front. The nurse at the hospital told me to pad it with a foam powder puff which helps. After a few weeks you will forget the pm is even there.

Try a sports bra

When I had my first PM, I found sports bras to be the best: the straps are far wider and I was able to position the edges away from the incision site. Once it had healed up, I went back to regular bras.
Interestingly, I didn't have the same problem with the replacement PM, presumably because there was no bruising and swelling that time. It happens the first time because of the pocket creation.
I have a friend who's incision is farther 'in' towards the centre of her chest, which was interesting: her straps don't touch it at all.

Welcome to the PM club!
The bra problem wasn't fun. I wore mine, but just kept that strap off the shoulder. Worked, but was a nuisance. LOL
Sending you speedy recovery vibes!

Bras

I wore strapless bras for the first 3 weeks. I hate strapless bras but I was desperate. Straps were really irritating to the site.

bra pad & seat belt pad

by aldeer - 2010-12-12 12:12:25

The bra problem is one of the hardest. The product did not help me at all. Had to try on many types of bras to find one that did not rub against the site. I think it may be different for each person. The seat belt was easy. At the automotive shop, the seat belt cover made of sheepskin works perfectly. It is under $10. Once in a while I have to adjust it, but it is great. Lots of good luck. It will get better:) aldeer

Bras

Hi

Having had a PM for 3 months now, and also with a small frame, I found this a real 'problem' so I got properly fitted in a department store by a lovely lady who asked where it was uncomfortable and explained what to look for when buying bras.

Now, I have no problems :) so I would suggest all you lovely ladies - treat yourself and do the same.
