Running after Pacemaker Implant

Hello everyone,

I will be receiving my pacemaker implant in a few days; I normally run around 18-20 miles a week. Would like to know from other folks when they were able to resume running ? Also wanted to know how long did it take to go back(1 week , 2 weeks or 2 months) to running at the same speed for the same distance?

Hi:)

Welcome to pacemaker land.

I don't have the answer to your question, but there is a wonderful search feature on this site - upper right hand corner...you should be able to get oodles of information.

However, given a few days, I'm certain many of our runners with pacemakers (or defibs) will respond to your post.

Good luck!!!!!

Hello- I'm also a runner and have no problems with my pacemaker (I call her pacey :) anyhow- with my last implant I also had to have a few leads replaced so I was "out" longer than expected- They always say to be careful as scar tissue needs to build up... I would ask your DR as they would know best but I would say probably within the month you will be ready- good luck, and keep us posted!

Hi There - I was walking immdiately after my implant. I was doing light running after about 3 weeks with no problems. I gradually increased my mileage and was backed to my normal mileage of about 60 miles a week two months after the implant with no issues.

My pacemaker is a year old, I have run 2 half marathons and a 10 miler and a list of 5ks so far but - I had to walk for about 6 weeks before I went back to running, now thats me, I almost have the same speed but I do have trouble with hills now?
my husband has a pacemaker too, his is 9 years old, he runs too and has never had any problems with his pacemaker and running. We don't really know but one other person with a pacemaker that runs, ps, we are 56 & 575 years old. good luck

Getting back to running

Hi,

I'm on my second pacemaker (got the first @ 8 yrs ago). I run 40-50 miles / week (56 years old) and have run @ 6 marathons (and 3 ultras) since the pacer.

You can likely start running a few days after the implant (once they determine that your stitches are fine). Depending on your issue, you may have to wait until they program your device to get back to where you were. I have 2nd degree block and it took 2 docs, the technician and a call to Medtronic while I was on the treadmill to get it right. However, the next day I was back to sub 8 min miles...so hang in there and we'll see you at Boston one of these years

Sports and Pacemaker Implant

Hi

I'm 31 years old and am on my second pacemaker as the first one pushed its way to the surface of my chest and needed to be removed. The new one was implanted one year ago under my chest muscle, tucked under the breast tissue. I am a very active person and exercise regularly and am finding that it is pushing its way to the surface again. Has anyone else experienced anything similar to this and if so what did you do about it? I know that a lot of people on here are runners so where is your pacemaker implanted that it stays in tact where it was implanted. I am worried that I will have to have another surgery if I continue this vigorous exercising such as (running, high impact aerobics).

Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
