arm pain after pacemaker surgery

I wonder if someone here can help me out here.
My dad (61yrs) had surgery and implanted a pacemaker 1month ago (in his right chest position). Starting from 1 week after his surgery, his right arm started feeling very big pain. It remains there constantly and never went away. Sometimes it was so painful that it woke him up at midnight and he could not go back to sleep. Recently his arm becames swollen and pain is still there.
Does anyone know what is causing such a big pain on his arm? I hope someone who may have gone through this in the past or have friends who went through similiar experience can help my dad out. It is highly appreciated. Thanks very much

Hi:)

Cabg Patch is correct....your father should be seen right away. Please call whoever implanted the pacemaker.

Let us know how he makes out, ok?

Swollen Arm

My dad had surgery Mar4th and was discharged after one day. While he was well on day 2 & 3, by day 4 his left hand and arm began to swell.. He was in so much pain and could not sleep that we took him to the local hospital. On the way there he took chest pains which caused his blood pressure to rise to 196 by the time we arrived... Fortunately he was treated immediately upon arrival. However the doctors were unable to figure out why the hand was so swollen.. They treated it as an infection and prescribed antibiotics and gave him morphine pills for the pain. He remained in the hospital for the day and was let go... 2 days later the swelling went down but moved to his right arm, needless to say another trip to the hospital. By this time, he had fluid on the lungs and doctors were stumped about the swelling.. He remained in the hospital for another 16 days and was prescribed with ARTHURTEC (not sure of spelling).. The swelling and pain finally disappeared and he is now home and on the mend. Our biggest problem now is handling bumpy roads and chest pains....

arm pain and fatigue

Thanks for the messages. My dad went to see the doctor. They said the pacemaker has been functioning well. They could not tell where his arm pain was from. Now the pain is narrowed down to his palm. No more swelling (fortunately). I wonder if it is helpful to get an xray check and see if the wire is in the right position, if that can ever be the cause of his pain.

Suzanne, hope your Dad get better soon. It is good to get the final prescription and know how to cope with it. Process can be long. Wish your dad all the best.
