Recovery

Hello my name is Wade, I am 14 and had my pacemaker put in at age 8. The first surgery was a few years back and I had to be rushed to the ER because my parents thought I was having an asthma attack. I really had a complete heart block that my doctor of 8 years some how failed to notice. He said I had a case of asthma just like any other kid. After my surgery no symptoms of asthma were ever noticed and they are still gone, But when I had my second surgery over the summer 2010 something strange happened. I had a second lead put in and the second lead was on a muscle so when it shocked the heart to keep the top chamber in the same beat as the lower a weird spasm would go through my entire body making me twitch. I went to the doctor and my doctor had to mess witht the functions and turn it down a little.
I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else.

Yes this happened to me. For three months I had an upper body spasm when I lay on my left side, particularly after eating. Two doctors and a specialist nurse said it couldn't come from my pm.An annual pacing session showed that both my atrial and ventricular leads weren't working properly because the insulation had been damaged. Both leads were replaced and a ward nurse said that she had heard of this effect before. The impulse apparently tracks back via a nerve that effects the diaphragm and causes the twitching. However, my experience is that many medics deny this is possible.

I have never heard of this before. You are a brave person. I hope what the doctor did has helped you. Please let us know how you are doing in the future.

You know you're wired when...

You fondly named your implanted buddy.

I finished 29th in London in 2 hours 20 minutes 30 seconds which is my fastest with or without a device so clearly it didn’t slow me down ! I had no problems apart from some slight chaffing on my scar - more Vaseline next time.
