At last I’ve found a useful and informative site for PM recipients! I was wondering if anyone knew how soon after implantation it would be safe to recommence with a push up and weight regime.

I had mine fitted 8 months ago and have been very wary about heavy lifting ever since, but having read some comments on here, I’m beginning to wonder if I’m being over-cautious.  If anyone could shed any light on this matter I would be most grateful.

I had a lead fail after just 8 months. They blamed it on the upper body exercise I resumed after the 1st 6 weeks, I too have done a lot of reading on this subject and have found no clear consensus despite that so many on this site do pretty much everything.
I had a long discussion with my new EP about this.The one thing he did stress was NOT to use machines because the constant repetitive motion in the same plane tends to flex the lead in the same spot over and over.
He said free weights were safer but hinted that it would be best to find some alternative way of maintaining the upper body.
Frankly I'm not eager to repeat the lead revision so will be very careful about what I do. FYI I am a very active hiker, skier, and gym nut and have no intention of slowing up in that regard other than the weights. So in conclusion I have to say- "you pays your money and you makes your choice".

I was told by my first EP no restrictions on weight lifting and was told I could resume all normal activities 2 weeks after implantation, which I did. I did start lighter than usual, but was back up to full lifts in a couple of weeks.

Now, for me the only "side" effects are additional implant pain, additional scaring around the implant, and my cadiologist says my implant wouldn't look as bad if I didn't workout.

Current EP says if it breaks, he will just remove and replace it.

After 6-8 weeks, it's safe to do push ups. There are a few drs who recommend against hanging (pull ups) and heavy lifting over the head, but most of us are told to do whatever we want. I'm on my 4th pm now and have never babied it. I do a boot camp and we do just about any type of lifting you can name, no problems so far!

None of us are the same so there probably isn't a definitive answer where "1 size fits all". I am going to wait 6 weeks and go back to the weights slowly. I don't know if this is the right way or not but it is going to be my way if things go normally over the next month.

One thing is for sure. There are many people with pacemakers lifting weights; some lifting heavy and often. I know 3 guys and one woman (all in their 50s) who really didn't lose a thing after getting a pacemaker after recovering from the implant process.

I wish an expert (cardiologist or PM technician that knows how to lift) would write a paper on this topic!

my cardiiologist said wait 6 weeks minimum before lifting. He reciommended cardio the day after i got the PM. There is no concensus on this weight lifting deal post PM. I am going to start after 6 weeks and start light and work my way up to heavier weights. My cardiologist did not talk about any lifts i can't do. I lift a body paret/day (chest, back, legs, arms, shoulders with weekend off,

I amgoing to baby shoulder presses and might avoid the pec deck for awhile. I suspect I will use machines more than free weights. I amold school and used free weight whenever I could until this. Machines are fine-- some (e.g. hammer strength) are betterthan others, imo

For me, after 2 months I went back to weight training excercise. I only lifted maximum weight of 30 lbs.

I am thinking that it would not be good to lift extremely heavy weight with your upper torso. Especially by the arms.

I would definitely talk to your Dr. about the weight limit.
