extra heart beat when coughing

I have had an ICD for 5 years to try to reduce my gradiant caused by HCM. Today when I went it for a routine interrogation some random events were showing up for the last month or so. This had never happened before and the Tech had concerns about what was going on. While talking to him I coughed and he determined I was having an extra heart beat when I coughed. The Cardiologist came in and had me cough several times to confirm what was happening.

I have been having problems since implantation with heart rate rising during vibration (rate response). They disabled rate response(pacer) and went through the cough drill again and determined my heart was adding the extra beat and the pacer was not affecting my heart.

I have felt poorly for the last month. They changed some of the pacer settings, added another drug to go with the Toperol (300mg), Cardizem (180mg) and Micardis(20mg) I was already taking. They seemed to be at a loss as to what was going on.

Sorry to hear you are not feeling well but hopefully with having your pacemaker's settings changed and the new medication, you will see an improvement.

If your cardiologist is at a loss, perhaps you could ask to be referred to an EP. It's always (in my opinion) to have a 2nd set of eyes look at your issue.

I was having a lot of issues and finally I got to see an EP and now I feel much much better.

Don't be afraid to ask.

Take care,
Pookie

I am not planning on letting any of this shorten my life. I am planning on living a long happy battery operated life. You never know maybe it will keep me alive longer. I sure know one thing I would have been dead before starting school without it.
