sick leave

Greetings all! Let me start by saying how grateful I am for being able to ask questions without feeling silly.

How do you know if you’re ready to go back to work? Just the idea of working with kids tires me out! I want to be on my game when I go back, but I don’t want a relapse.  I will have six weeks in, in about two weeks....and another question: why is everyone telling me that I fit the criteria for certain Ssi benefits?  I am just forty four, is that possible?

Good luck with SSI

I have rheumatic heart disease, inflammatory arthritis, hep C have had multiple strokes had a pacer put in in September and SSI and SSDI have both turned me down. My Brother both RN's with many years experience can not believe I was turned down. I am filing bankruptcy because I cannot live on the little bit I have coming in. Even though I do not feel well enough to work If this job interview goes through I will be at work because I cannot even afford to go bank rupt without something to live on. I am comingto terms with this and hope that All will go well. My pacer is working well it is my other issues that would get me SSI and SSDI. This site has been a God Send to me and I say thank you for them everyday.

When to return to work

By the time you get to the 6 week point there is no pacemaker reason for not going back to work. You didn't mention whether you need to lift kids, and how heavy they are. That could be the only limiting factor.

Basically, you know the demands of your work, and should have an idea of whether you can do it or not. At 74 yrs when I had my first pacer implanted I was out running around in a 4 wheel drive truck off road in a few days. The same after my replacement at 80yrs.

It's different with someone like Kathykat11 who has a history of multiple issues. In her case it isn't the pacemaker that is causing the problem.

You need to hire a Lawyer if you really think you should get SSI or SS disabilty. There is a flat fee that they charge for applying for SS disabilty if you are approved down the line. No out of pocket expence. This is set by the Goverment. It might take a couple years, but if you win, they will go back and back pay you from the first day you applyed.

Myself, I'm getting the later of the two. They approved me the first time around due to my health and what all my doctors had reported and all the time I spent in the hospital and test that I went thru. I am now 100% depended on my buddy. Oh, I made way to much money to get SSI. Another thing is that I'm 53 years old and they look at your work history. I been paying SS from the age of 14 years old. I had always had a job and all those years, never been without one.

When I went in to fill out the paperwork along with my wife, as I taked to the lady asking questions, tears were flowing out of me just knowing I'm a person that loved his job and knowing I will never be able to return back. It hit me very hard that day. If I could have this implant removed, I would so I could go back to work. I even talked to my doctors about this and its not going to happen.

I just have never understood who and who does not qualify for disability benefits. WHO is so powerful in the SS office to be 'God'? Let me share/compare.

Of my many Friends, I have one on disability for her back. She is almost 50 but has been on disabiltiy for several years. She tried to work for a hardware store but was paid more monies than she was allowed to work/make. SS made her return her monies over the law/not work. She lifts heavy boxes, equipment, rides/feeds horses, etc. She gets a monthly check & works 'odd' jobs for cash pay.

My other Friend (40+) who has been a diabetic since a Child, had taken care of himself for years, developed very rare diseases from diabetes/complications and stays more in the hospital than out can not get SS monies. His Dr's., letters from all concerned to the 'powers' to be, His Congressmen, etc. have not helped him. This man would rather be out working & supporting his Family more than almost 'dying' in the hospital all the time. His health gives him no choice but not to work, but he can not get SS.

My heart goes out to all the honest people who really need/depend on SS disability.
