Shucks, I always wanted to learn tae kwon do...
Have you every thought about capoeira? It looks pretty cool. It would have to wait until you're fully recovered though, what with the handstands and cartwheels...

Also thinking of TKD again

I discussed with a teacher. We agreed that I could be "special ed" -- no sparring, nor even two-person drills. I would just follow along in the back of the room.

Also, for my own health, I would have to restrain myself from full force ... I'm aiming for that 60%-80% max heart rate, and don't want the huge spikes.

Finally ... a couple of my pills make me dizzy, so have to figure out how to get up slowly, and be careful bending over.

martial art

Tai chi is a very good option, but---most young people are too impatient and prefer the more physical martial arts. However, tai chi you can do all your life, long after your body will not support arts like tae kwon do or capoeira ( which is beautiful). I've practiced tai chi since 1991 and practice is the proper word--there is always another level to explore so I never get bored. It keeps my joints free and moving, helps breathing, and helps with stamina. It makes me feel good even when I'm unhappy with the way I performed it. It's very important to me and I try to make sure I find the time every day to practice. It helps to center me. Good instruction is very hard to find and without a good teacher it is difficult to get the advantages you should. I do Yang style (Tung/Dong family style) but there are at least 4-5 other styles and some are more athletic than others. It is not all slow movement, there are fast forms, family sets (or forms) weapons sets (sword, knife, fan, and staff) and two person sets. Push hands is very popular with some and it is a two-person form that sometimes even resembles wrestling (not suppose to but does). Push hands got a big lift the the U.S. when a guy from New York won the Chinese push hand championship a while back. I wish I could do it better than I do but I keep on trying. It will be a sad day when I can't.

Kendo

Try Kendo. It's incredibly fast and powerful, but the equipment used protects the chest etc.
