sitting in the sun

Hi I have a question...I have had 2 pacemakers since 2001..I am 65 and have always enjoyed the hot weather ...sitting out and reading or going to the beach...but just lately the hot sun makes my heart feel like it is beating very hard...is this because of the pacemaker...or my age (lol) as seems to be the doctors answer for everything...was wondering if anyone else has experience this sensation

I don't know what it is, BUT

I know first hand what you're talking about, and I'M NOT OLD. Funny......because doctors usually give me the excuse that I'm too young, and that drives me crazy.
If I had a dollar for everytime I've heard that I have the autonomic system of an 80 year old....I'd be a very rich gal. Unfortunately, I'm still dirt poor.....

Hot weather has always drove me bananas, anything hot really. Hot tubs, long hot showers, and hot soaking tub baths have driven my heart rate up since I can remember. I just thought everyone was like that and it was "normal".

Since my 5th ablation, I find that I'm able to tolerate heat a little better, which is good because I live where it gets very HOT, but now instead of my heart racing as was the usual response, now my heart beat pounds.
I'm still trying to find answers, and I definitely don't have any for you. I just wanted you to know that you're not alone.......I would bet others here know what we're talking about as well.

If I find out anything, I'll certainly post it.

Me too

I am 67 and am on my second pm. Quite often at the beach my pulse rate jumps up, especially when a sweet young thing in a tiny bikini walks by. Truthfully, I think the same thing happened long before my pacemaker, I just don't remember why!

Being old has nothing to do with it! Giving my age defies everything I believe in, but I can tell you I'm not. Heat has never been my friend, but my first summer with this tag-a-long, I could not take it, and went to the PM clinic and complained! I don't know what they did, but there was an adjustment made and I am not nearly as sensitive. My motto is " if in doubt ask" the clinic and that's hwat I go with.

Check your meds

Some medications warn against too much sun. It could be your meds rather than your PM.

And you're NOT old!

thank god others have a problem, not really thanks but i was thinking it was just me. i am 53 and on no meds at this time. and i can't take the heat , but the nurse has said it just couldent be the pm. but she does't have one . so here i am again in question . guess i dident help but still nice to know we are not alone.

Another point of view

Hi there!
My 'baby' is the pacer . . . just 6 years old (he's had the pacemaker since he was 18 months--virus attacked the AV node at 6 months). Anyway, he can't take heat or cold!!! Not sure if it's 'just him' or the pacemaker, but it certainly isn't his age :) I guess I just tend to think that if your heart is 'compromised' by anything at all, extreme sensations (heat/cold/running/stairs/etc.) are going to be extreme for you. Not scientific, just our experiences . . .
Good luck & God Bless!

Oh, by the way, Harry isn't on ANY medication at all, so the 'medication makes you susceptible to heat' isn't an option in our case at all!

pounding heart

by jeanmarie - 2009-05-01 08:05:29

Thank you everyone who commented about my pounding heart when in the sun, I really appreciated it, I feel very fortunate that the only medicine I take is Lasix for congestive heart failure and coumandin...and I walk 2 miles every day, this winter bundled up when temp was -17 yes minus 17 and still walked but by Feb. decided that it was time to spend a month in Florida, which was wonderful, envy those living where it is always above freezing..
thanks again for the input

virus

by jeanmarie - 2009-05-03 08:05:22

thank you for your comment, I found it interesting that the reson you baby had to have pacemaker was due to virus, because that is what happen to my heart, had the flu awas working did not go to doctor and then went for some other reason, and they discovered the heart atrial fibrillation...put in a pacemaker, I have been thru so much with the heart, just because did not go to doctor with the flu...I am praying for your son that he will be just fine with the pacemaker...give him a lot of love..and God Bless
