New From Medtronic

Anther electronic invention from Medtronic. I wish they would prefect their pacemakers and leads before adding to the list of products they have in their stable. Of course I don't have the illness that could be treated by this device, so my thoughts shouldn't count I guess.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Patients suffering from obsessive, distressing thoughts have a new treatment option: a pacemaker-like device that relieves anxiety with electrical jolts to the brain.
The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday approved Medtronic's Reclaim device as the first implant to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder, which causes uncontrollable worries, such as fear of germs or dirt.

Patients suffering from the disorder try to relieve their anxiety with obsessive behavior, such as washing their hands or checking locks repeatedly.

"These are obtrusive thoughts that take control of people's lives to the point that they lose their jobs, can't have relationships and in many cases, can't even leave their homes," said Dr. Hooman Azmi of Hackensack University Medical Center.

While about 2.2 million Americans have the disorder, the new device would only be available to a small group of patients who don't respond to other treatments, such as antidepressant drugs and therapy.

Just what I need....another pacemaker. (for my anxiety).

I wonder if Medtronic would do "buy one, get one free"?

Perhaps they could run yet another lead off of my present pacemaker!!!!!!!!!!!

Frank,

Each day there are times I think I need something like one of these gadgets to get my brain off its dead rump and start doing something worth while.

But seriously, if the thing will start a brain to working I would love to go to Washington and pick out a few hundred candidates to have one implanted.

Just what the doctor needs

This is great. Now instead of worrying about the germs the implanted with the pacemaker, the wrong settings, and the unnecessary drugs...with the magic of a brain pacemaker we just peacefully die from their mistakes and won't get mad about it.

Maybe they will come up with a brain defibrillator that will restart my brain when it gets to buzzing around!!!!

There is no end to this.

Where theres money theres rogues. How about a pacemaker that stops you wetting yourself when you get old. It could bleep to give you a 2 minute warning and open you bladder . What with lung pacemakers , heart pacemakers, brain pacemakers our life span will be determined by our bank balance. Cheers peter
