PM Protectors

Hi,

I'm a mom of a 6 year old with a pacemaker. His pacemaker was implanted when he was 1 day old. Now that he is getting older and more active in sports, I'm really worried his pacemaker. I was wondering if anyone had info on a protective vest that he could wear. His pacer is still in his abdomen. My husband & I made him one with an old t-shirt and a football pad. He played t-ball last spring and wants to play again this year. I would like to find one that gave me more piece of mind.

Chest Protection

Good afternoon! My son Kyle is 11. He got his pacemaker 3 years ago. He is extremely actice in baseball and basketball. He has worn a protective shirt made by Easton for the past 3 years. It protects the entire front of the body and the lower back as well. We live in Houston and this shirt is available at all of our larger sporting goods stores. Kyle has been pitching in major baseball World Series events with this shirt. It is very comfortable and non-restrictive and cant be seen under his game shirt.

Mom,
Things sure have changed since my ball of fire got a PM at age 3(18 years ago). I am so glad that there are.
companies now making some kind of protective gear,
and don't worry, in a couple of years he will make subtle changes in the way he plays to protect himself, it is a natural defence.
We started soccer at age 2 - older brother needed an opponent. We played baseball through juniors, ran hurdles, threw javelin, powder-puff football and marched for hours with a bass drum, now away at college and doing soccer, ultimate frisbee, and is just one test away from her first black belt.
Sports was not our enemy -6th grade; slipped on a small puddle of spilled paint and fell across a desk just right and cracked a lead, you don't see it right away it takes a couple of weeks for them to run down- and then if you are lucky, the timing is perfect to change to a shoulder PM.
Don't let him see your worry.
Just take a deep breath, do the best you can, and let them go, he will be just fine. Bless you all.

Chest Protector

My 11 year old son has had a pacemaker since he was two. We have used the Rawlings form fitting chest protector for sports and sledding. It comes in an vaccuum sealed pack and once you open it you mold it to their chest for a custom fit and then allow it to harder. It can be worn discreetly under t-shirts too. He never complained that it was uncomfortable. He's also used the custom padded shirts. They look alot like UnderArmour. A company in Chicago makes them but I can't remember the name. Our cardiologist told us about it.

There is a product out on the market specifically for pacemaker protection. It's called Paceguard. It has been used for sports or other daily activities, Their website is www.paceguard.com. I know people who have used this and have had great results. Good luck
