fish oil supplement

I have been taking a fish oil supplement but recently read on the WEB MD site that if you wear a pacemaker you should not take a fish oil supplement. Does anyone out there know anymore about this??

Hi...

could you please direct me to the exact article, I'd love to read it as well. I've taken a look at the WebMD site and can't seem to find that particular article.

fish oils

I asked my EP about fish oils one time and it was kind of like, "sure, if you want to, sounds like a good idea." Not exactly a rousing endorsement. I also have a friend that takes fish oil on a regular basis-they said they had to try three different brands before they found one they didn't think made them smell "fishy."

Try a Google search on "heart medications fish oil" and or some combination's. I think I was just reading about Plavix (and aspirin and coumadin) and saw something about fish oil supplements not being a good match there.

SOUNDS FISHY TO ME

??? Fish oil (I take cod liver oil -two teaspoons a day ) helps reduce the risk of SCD and VT and dangerous heart rythyms. Fish oil is anti arrhythmic and I have previously read it is beneficial to ICD patients. So this is contrary to your statement. There is such conflicting evidence out there about so many things that it can cause confusion. However although I am against health supplements the benefits and or risks of taking non vitamin enhanced fish oil ( ie cod liver oil) are potentially so great, that I intend to continue taking it. Hope that is useful info. Cheers Peter

Not Necessarily Too Fishy

A Google search using the terms "fish oil heart arrhythmia" yields a number of articles generally* stating fish oil is not an anti arrhythmic medication and one article specifically cited that "Fish oil may cause arrhythmia among ICD patients." Using search term of "plavix fish oil interaction" yields a number of articles suggesting fish oil can affect medications that slow blood clotting (Anticoagulant / Antiplatelet drugs) and you should consult with your doctor based on your medical condition.

Overall, it seems though, fish oil can be very beneficial to "most" people.

* generally means like lawyers, if you look hard enough, you can always find something opposite. As Peter noted "There is such conflicting evidence out there about so many things that it can cause confusion."

Meds/Fish Oil

I can not take fish oil supplements. In one of my meds. it said fish oil would cause problems. I would have to go check to know which med. I take BP meds and Warfarin for Coumadin. I think it is the Warfarin.

Have a great day ~ today we are getting a nice, cool, slow rain, in anticipation of our "big" cold front of 50 tonite. Carolyn G. in TEXAS ( :

Why does it say not to take it? I'm on fish oil at my cardiologist's recommendation.

Fishy Fish Oil

Hi

There is an issue with fish oils if one is on an anticoagulent regime eg warfarin for atrial fibrillation.
My anticoagulation clinic here in UK prohibits fish oil supplements because the capsule strength between doses is not consistent, and creates problems maintaining my INR levels within the prescribed limits of between 2 - 3.
