Pacemaker

Hi!
I agree with Ian: If you diagnosis is bradycardia (slow heart beat), probably with pauses, then a pacemaker is the only option. There are hardly any drugs out there that will speed up a heart that's beating too slow. Before I got my pacemaker, I was put on one drug which does exactly this, but it didn't increase my heart rate enough to avoid a pacemaker implant. In Germany this drug was called "Itrop" (Ipratropiumbromid). I did a quick search, but could not find out if it's available abroad and under which name, sorry. Also, this drug can only be given, if the natural pacemaker of the heart, the sinus node, is too slow. It does not help when your diagnosis is a heart block.
Angrysparrow mentioned an ablation, but that is only for different types of fast arrhythmia. The ICD is for fast arrhythmias, namely ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation, too, though it can always also function as a pacemaker; it can shock the heart back into rhythm when a fast, life-threatening arrhythmia occurs. A CRT device is usually used to treat heart failure that is to some degree caused by the heart's lower chambers not beating insync. It stimulates both ventricles (heart's lower chambers) and the right atrium (upper chamber), so it's a special kind of pacemaker. Unlike Angrysparrow I'd not say that ICDs and CRTs are not as tried and true. Both devices have been implanted for quite some time (ICDs since the 1980's), and are doing a great job.
If you let us know what your diagnosis is, maybe we'll be able to help you a little bitter.
Best wishes
Inga

I have had my biventricular/defibrillator for almost three months. I have CHF. I am still learning about my device. you have come to the right place if you are on fence about getting a pacemaker. I for the most part will just read the posts on here and learn from them. I don't comment much because, I don't have much experience or knowledge yet.
you, put one line up there on your post..... you did'nt give any info about what your condition is and what your DOCTOR HAS SAID TO YOU!!! so we have to guess you were told you need a pacemaker. so when my Doctor told me I would need pacemaker/icd. had I known about this site. it sure would have helped me through my fears. I was so scared !!! I am so grateful to have it!! I can't tell you how ALIVE I feel. it make a huge difference in the quality of life.
Do you like and trust your Doctor? that is very important to have a Doctor you like and trust!!! and if you answered yes to that last question, you probably need a pacemaker.

After a treadmill stress test, in which I nearly passed out, the cardio doc said..."pacemaker"!! I asked if there were any alternatives...and he said "Yes, death"!!! So, a year and a half ago, I had my PM installed....love it.

I love this new part of me, and very, very thankful that this technology exists and I know that it's all only going to get better over time.
Not really

Hello Rajendra You haven't said what medical condition you are talking about.
Most pacemakers are fitted for bradycardia, where your heart rate goes too slow and this can often be accompanied by cardiac pauses . A pacemaker , as far as I know, is the ONLY treatment available for this.
Drugs can be used to lower heart rates which are too high but are not so reliable at increasing it. If you have heart rhythm problems, drugs and procedures such as cardioversion or ablation may get you back into normal rhythm but for symptomatic bradycardias you need a pacemaker.
There is one alternative of course... DEATH .. which most people are keen to avoid !
Please give us more info about your individual situation and people here will be keen to help.
Best wishes
Ian
