OPEN MRI

Hello,
I was wondering if a person with a pacemaker can go to an open MRI ?

I had to research that one to find out what an "open MRI" is. Found website http://www.openmri.net/ that gives an overview or what it is. At the bottom it says that folks with pacemakers or other metal cannot use an MRI machine. Presume that includes the "open" MRI as well, otherwise you would think that they would have qualified it. However, given that an open MRI has about 1/12 the magnetic power of a traditional MRI, one might think that an MRI might be possible of the knee or ankle area, as long as a certain distance was maintained from the PM and the MRI did not proceed any further towards the PM. However, my personal opinion is that I would doubt that someone with a PM could get ANY body parts tested even with an open MRI. But you might want to check with both the manufacturer of your PM and the manufacturer(s) of open MRI device(s) and get their opinions. Also, I just conducted a cursory search on the Internet, so you could do more research than I did. -Dan

I was told that I could never have an MRI again. I was told to even be careful when standing outside an MRI room.

My Electrophysiologist, my implant rep., and everything I can read about pacemaker/ defib.s, STAY AWAY FROM [ any MRI ] All magnets are bad for your implant. MRI = Magnetic Resonance Imagaing. first word is magnet..Luckily I had an MRI of skull a couple of months prior to implant. But all have said no MRI not even in the same room with one. I did have an Abdominal and Pelvic ST Scan with & without dye 6/3/08 [last week] without any special prep or sheilds or anything , laid on table she pulled sheet over me , said drop your drawers, I even left my shoes on. When I got home I put Ct scan disc in computer and could see my 2 wires from my implant going into my heart. But always check with your Doc.

Hi,

I just wanted to let you know that I have a pacemaker (actually I have two pacemakers) and I had a closed MRI a few years ago. I never had any side effects or issues from having an MRI.
