Back of Arms and Shoulders

I need safe weight exercises for the back of arms and shoulders. Once my scar heals, I will begin. I am female and only use 3,4,5 & 6 pound hand weights. Thanks.

Check with your dr first but once you've had time to heal, you should be able to do any exercise you want as long as it feels comfortable.Check out sparkpeople.com, they have a lot of exercise ideas. I do push ups and tricep dips for shoulders and backs of arms rather than weights, it's more resistance than hand weights.

Have you ever had a second opinion? I know my dr is more liberal than some, but I've never heard of one so worried about hurting leads as yours. Leads are resilient and designed to move with us so very few drs give many, if any, exercise restrictions. The only common one is pull ups and very heavy weights, but even that is not all drs, just a few. I've been doing repetitive push ups, rowing, swimming, tennis etc since 1993 when I got my first pm and haven't "sawed" a lead yet, and there are many here like me who are very active.

I'm not saying your dr is wrong or that it's a bad thing to be cautious, but sometimes it can't hurt to question them a bit more to see if there's truly something that makes you a higher risk than the rest of us, or if he's just extremely cautious. I grew up being treated by a mega conservative pediatric cardiologist. I wasn't allowed to do any sports at all, nothing that would be considered exertion. (which probably explains a lot about why I haven't slowed down since I got that first pm! lol) As an adult, I learned that most kids with my problem live perfectly normal childhoods, some even do competitive sports. I thought my restrictions were normal but they were not, I just happened to have a very conservative dr who erred on the extremely cautious side. Anyway, your business but your posts remind me of this, just wondering if this is a similar situation. Good luck.

I see that TraceyE posted she does push-ups but my doctor specifically told me I can never do push-ups or pull-ups again. The repetitive motion would act like a saw cutting the leads in half eventually. Just be sure to talk to your doctor and be specific about what you want to do. Each person is different and what is allowed for one person may not be allowed for you. I also had to give up golf. But tricep dips are ok and are working out fine for me. Bicep curls too.
