can your heart stop working?

Hi every body! My beautiful and lovely friends at this wonderful site. I have a question. I have a pacemaker. I also have times when my heart rate drops really low and suddenly it goes really fast. Anyway, i have passed out due to this issue, however, my doctor tells me i should not be worried because the pacemaker is not going to allow my heart rate to go too low. Ok fine...but sometimes when i have these episodes and i pass out he tells me " Its not like you are going to die the pacemaker will not allow the heart rate to go too low". Now my question is...i dont know if any one knows but...Can u die with a pacemaker? I mean, if your heart just chooses to stop working...will u die? I guess i am confused. Can your heart just stop working one day? And if it does, what will the pacemaker do? just keep u alive anyway? Im just curious. God bless.

I have the same thing, and my doctor told me I have PVCs; only I've never actually passed out. Came close, though. Hmmm, interesting thing about our bionic wonders. It's cool, but sick and evil at the same time. :)

You will not die from a low hr or pauses but none of us will live forever. The pm is a small part of a larger cycle. It generates the pulse that causes the muscle in the heart to contract. When we die the whole system shuts down- brain, lungs, heart- the pm will still generate those pulses but the body stops responding to them.

try to live your life be happy and don't fuss about it. i know you do that anyway so keep on doing it. we will all die but no sense dwelling o it at your age. jessie

brokenheart I think the pm is more reliable than the old fashioned way of the heart beating for itself, i'm sure it will be fine. Just think about it, we are regularly monitored for any problems, most people who rely on the old fashioned method arent as lucky as us.

Perhaps one day everyone will have a pm.
