Hi every one! God bless. uff....im so frustrated. Just heard from my stomach doctor i have gallstones and i need to get my gall bladder removed. What more can they do to me??? Just would like to know if any one has had this operation and if there is anything i need to know regarding my pacemaker. I talked to my old cardio and they told me that a magnet had to be placed on top of my pacer while they do the surgery. Im feeling scared. Has any one had this done whlile having heart problems and a pacemaker? Any advice or comment will be appreciated. thank you so much and God bless.

Dont know about having op with pm. but presume its the same as any other anaesthetics and lots of ppl on here have had surgery with no ill effects.

I know quite a few ppl whove had gall bladder surgery in recent years, keyhole, done quickly, and out home next day, a weebit sore but thats all.

Hope it goes well, i think we just worry so much more now weve got pm's but actually we are much safer in surgery than most people probably.

gall bladder

I don't know about the operation with a PM, but I had it several years before I got the PM. There was nothing to it. I had it done by the keyhole method. I had it done on a monday, went home the next day. On friday as a volunteer fire chief, I drove a truck to a fire. Was kinda tired, but OK.

Why do you need it?

Are the gall stones causing you any problem or are they just basing the decision on an x-ray or CT-scan?

I have a gall bladder packed with stones show up on CT-scans for years. I have made the decision to leave my gall bladder intact unless it actually causes me problems. So far nothing.

Gall bladder surgery has replaced tonsillectomies as the preventative surgery and money maker. Just saw on TV last night that a new study shows a large % of appendectomies are also unneeded.

I suggest doing some internet research on it before subjecting yourself to the surgery.

As Frank said perhaps worth getting a second opinion

Surgery

As with any surgery you are entitled to a second opinion and that's always a good idea. Gallbladder problems are diagnosed by ultrasound and HIDA scan which tracks the flow of bile from the liver where it's produced through the cystic and common bile ducts and into the duodenum or upper small intestine. The function of the gallbladder is to store and concentrate bile to break down fat and neutralize fat in partly digested food. Sometimes all that slows down and gallstones form which may just sit there and not bother you for years or may lodge in a duct and cause problems. Usually your first sign of trouble is abdominal pain. If you have had the proper studies and the second opinion of another surgeon you'll do just fine. I had my gallbladder removed by laparoscopic cholecystectomy and I and my pacemaker have done just fine. Not even any pain afterwards. As to appendectomies being unnecessary, that is another story entirely. Appendectomies are often done on an emergency basis when bacteria have leaked into the abdominal cavity and peritonitis results which can be fatal. You need to trust your physician and the research you do yourself rather than tv or internet comments.

surgery

Well i went to the gi doctor primarily because i was having pain after i eat. Every single day. Horrible pain. I was diagnosed with gastritis but meds didnt help me. so then i was send for the ultrasound which showed the gallstones. I have heard that people have lived with this with no problems. But I in the other hand im having stomach problems and i do fear that one of those stones can leak out to the common vile duct causing possibly pancreatitis. This also runs in the family. My gramma died as a result of pancreatitis and a tumor she developed as well. So i rather have a small laparascopic surgery then to wait until it gets worse and then have a major surgery and huge scar. ;0) I will definitely ask the surgeon lots of questions before i get it done. And i will not rush into it. Thank you so much for your responses. God bless you.
