Expresso coffee machines (Breville) and/or hair dryers

Any reports of hair dryer interference with a St. Jude pacemaker?    I'm trying to separate anxiety provoked pulsing from my PM with actual interference.    i.e. I was standing in the kitchen rinsing dishes when my partner fired up our vacuum cleaner in a back room and my PM started to pulse like crazy.   I finally went and sat down in the living room (as far away as I could get and everything settled within a few minutes.     I had a similar experience with our Expresso maker which seems to vibrate at a high level and we've had it in a back room where my partner has been making the coffee.    I'm less hyper vigilant as the days go by, but still very aware when the PM is pulsing.   So I've gradually been re-introducing various devices.   I still have not used the hair dryer and just towel dry my hair for now.   I have a basic PM for brachycardia (slow heart beat).

Actually I feel the pulsing fairly often and sometimes it is almost like a small electric shock.  The other night ...just as I was drifting off to sleep

.  Scared myself yesterday when some stuff started to fall from a shelf and I automatically reached out and pulled on another incision in my left armpit.  (Had complications with surgery when I apparently moved during the surgery and my left lung was penetrated and collapsed) It is one month today since that surgery and I am still black/blue from my armpit to my waist, with quite a bit of discomfort.   Had it checked yesterday by my GP though and everything seems to be on track, so that was a relief.

I go to my first PM clinic on January 11th and will see if the pulsing sensation is normal.  It does seem to fire at a stronger level from time to time.  Although yesterday after I made the move that was too high yet for my left arm, it felt like an eternity before I felt it pulse again.  (I was concerned I might have pulled the leads from the PM out of position)  But the saving grace was the pull on the incision in my armpit from the tube they had inserted to drain off air/fluid in the chest cavity so the lung could expand again, which stopped me from going any further than I had.

I am sorry you had the complication. I am also struggiling with not moving my arm! I keep putting it behind me. I have not had any sensations like that YET!  haha

you are right, the pain stops us from doing too much. I go back on the 10th. I don't even know if my Dr. is getting my pacmaker signals, so much confusion! Just hope it is working ok!!! I wont know if I have pauses till they tell me! ( I never had symtoms just slower heart beat! ) Well, they said I had 2 pauses of 3 secounds. but I must have not know them! Take care and I used my styler today, didn't have any issues either! Have a nice New Years! Ileen

Feelings

The only thing you should have felt when the vacuum cleaner was running in the other room was guilt for making your partner vacuum.

And yes the hair dryer and coffe maker are a risk...when used together a spill could cause the hair dryer to short out and defibrilate you.

You guys are being paranoid and allowing your imaginations to control you. Get a grip and stop. Start enjoying life instead of hypochondria, it's more fun.

Hi

I have always been told it is safe to use  hairdryer but to keep the motor  away from the pacemaker site and you will be fine. I have a dual pacemaker St Judes had it for 7yrs now. I was petrified when I first had mine but over time you will relax..Take care .

ERPM: a new App for pacemaker and ICD recipients.

by RDL79 - 2017-02-09 04:25:59

Dear Corie, I want you to know that on Googleplay store there is an Android App named ERPM. It gives you a lot of answers!

The acronym stands for “Environmental risks for Pacemaker and ICD” and it is an application for pacemaker and ICD recipients. This application has a list of objects that you can encounter, in the home - or outside - environment, or some diagnostic and therapeutic procedures usually present in healthcare environments. All of these are potentially able to generate an electromagnetic field that can affect the proper function of your pacemaker or ICD. For each area (at home or outside) you will find environments (like kitchen or bank) in which you will see numerous items listed; similarly in the healthcare area. Not all listed items are potentially risky and this will be indicated by a color code. A tutor will always be available to remind you of the meaning of the color codes. The App also has an item search system and moreover, it will give you the opportunity to tell an object not found in order to find it in future updates.

Bye bye..

I have a well tuned pacer. I hardly know I have it. I am 76 year old, hike and camp alone in the desert. I have more energy than I have had in a long time. The only problem is my wife wants to have a knob installed so she can turn the pacer down.
