Just Got a Pacemaker

Just got a pacemaker yesterday. It was all very sudden and I apparently would have died if I didn't get it. So here I am the first night home trying to get to sleep but can't. My heart won't slow down. I'm sure I will fall asleep eventually but right now I'm not sure what I got myself into.

I'm alive so what am I complaining about? I really don't know but I sure hope I figure it out soon.

Welcome to the club.

Most of us get pacemakers in urgent or emergent circumstances.

yes, they are implanted to keep your heart going at a correct rate, to mend a broken electrical system and other situations.

Its a bit of a shock at first but the good news is that you will now be okay.

if you cannot sleep, at least rest for a few hours.

remember, you will now be okay.   It takes time.

Best wishes

It's a shock

For a lot of people here, getting a PM came out of the blue, and it can take a while to wrap your mind around it. Give it time. I've had mine for 51/2 years and the other day I was giving a medical history, mentioned the arrythmias and forget to add that I had a PM!

Don't lie there counting your heartbeats. Read, listen to some calming music, or try some of the sleep inducing sounds to be found on Youtube.

Attiude is very important. "I'm alive" is a good thing to remember. Most of us find that once we are healed up--except for the alive part--not much has changed.

what's fast

If your rate was very slow before (most of us are, that's why we got the pacers in the first place!), a normal rate is going to feel fast for a while. My rate was 30's before then suddenly 80's and I felt like I was constantly aware of it and it was racing. It wasn't really racing, but normal is 3x what I was used to so it felt that way. Eventually the feeling went away.

It's good to be grateful and complaining is a waste of energy, BUT! It's normal to feel shock, to go through a period of mourning or blues, to feel overwhelmed. There is an emotional component to healing as well as the physical. Cut yourself some slack, give it a few weeks and you'll be back to normal. Maybe even a new, improved normal because now your heart is beating normally.

Thanks for the comments

Been 3 days now and I'm feeling a bit better. Sleeping a little bit better as well. Going through the full range of emotions but the pain is pretty much gone.

I guess I'll get used to this since I don't really have a choice. On the other hand, I'm really happy about still being alive!

Welcome

It is a shock because we are healthy and then boom-we have a pacemaker. Mine will be one month impanted tomorrow-1/16/17. And I am still trying to understand why and what lead up to this. Relax. We newbies are still adjusting. And I understand. There are times in the day when my heartbeats are literally racing. The it goes back to normal because I take inhale then exhale and try to be positive in between the breathing. One day at a time. Try to relax. Try to sleep. I used to suffer with insomnia. There are nights I get to sleep very late after going to bed. But. overall, my sleeping has improved.
